We stop in the town before leaving Katherine. It is 10 am and the local market is in full swing. We love a market and it is our lucky day as there is a biltong man! We stock up on biltong and some milk tarts made by the stall holders wife to eat on our journey today. It gets the tick of approval.
One last stop at Finch cafe for some coffee, iced coffee, date & coconut slice and lemon tart. Love this place, the atmosphere, the staff and the food.
As we head south from Katherine we are back on the straight roads with very little traffic. It feels a bit weird returning via the same route.
We stop at Mataranka for lunch. Back to our campground we stayed at on the way up. We feel some nostalgia as we eat lunch, drink smoothies and say hi to the guinea fowl.
Then on to Daly Waters Hi Way Inn where we camp for the night. Now this campground has some lovely grass and shade for us to put up the tent but the amenities are in serious need of maintenance. I find the skeleton of a frog in the ladies toilets, your clothes would most likely come out of the washing machine dirtier than they went in and the bbq in the camp kitchen was on a lean and looked ready to cark it. Yes, this place has seen better days.
Right in front of our tent is a waterhole. When we arrive Hawks and crows are circling and drinking, next arrives a couple of horses followed by a couple of giant pigs. Different flocks of birds arrive during the late afternoon - lorikeets, galahs, red tailed black cockatoos, pigeons, willy wagtails, magpie larks and more. Who needs television? We watch the show while cooking dinner on the grass in front of the tent. Now that we have left the humidity behind the evening temperature is really pleasant.
