After 6 hour minibus ride we arrived in Bonny Bonito. The town itself was quaint with a square that had giant jumping fish water features, loads of curio shops and a cachasa (local Brazilian sugar cane and main ingredient for traditional Caiparinhas) factory. Even though low season, the Rio de Prata was fully sold out due to a large tour group that took over the town. So we went to the Natural Aquarium instead, which was awesome in the true sense of the word. The water had 25meter visibility and snorkelling through this natural river with larger than life size fish was so good for the soul. After our 45min snorkel down the narrow yet crystal river we did a short zip line into the larger river. The pathway back led via a large lake with clear viz as well and plantations that are geared towards serving as habitat for local wild life.
Wonder above wonder the next day 2 places became available at different time slots which Rona and I took. Although this was also a snorkelling trip it was so different. It took 25min to reach the river through the bush by Jeep. Once there, we walked for another 30min to get to the river. We initially swam around to see all the fish and for the guide to explain their names and characteristics. We then started the one and half hour snorkel floatation down the river. The river was much wider than the natural aquarium and is home to many more and larger species of fish. In addition this river also has a few caymans that lurk about. It was most enjoyable and even though another snorkel expedition well worth doing as well.
Bonito's night life is pretty much limited to the Taboa factory restaurant that plays live music and allows space for people to Samba, Of course all different flavours of Cachasa is on sale here. The entire place is full of graphite and they also welcome writing on the furniture. I rather interesting place.
The American guy, Dave joied us for dinner and we all had a great time out at Taboa. Bonito was well worth a visit and was on the way to our next destination...the boarder!
