Day 59: Mon 25 Aug 2014: Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island
Flinders Chase, South Australia
J & C were super keen to try fishing before we headed off so we bought uncooked prawns at the IGA and got the gear out. We caught fish off the big commercial pier in Kingscote. Only little guys and I'm not even sure what they were but it's always fun. Morning tea in the café in town and a few errands and we were off. (Oh, Amanda got a Dr Who book/figurine thing and I got an Avengers comic.)
Next, we drove to the Island Pure Sheep Diary. Yes, sheep diary. I had never heard of a sheep diary. We got to see them being milked, by machine, in 2 straight lines. And then we saw the processing room where they make the milk into cheese and yoghurt. The milk is high in cream and naturally homogenised so good for this purpose apparently. The tour included tasting of several cheeses and yoghurt which we all liked. The lady with dreadlocks was fun and a bit crazy. At the end, she called the sheep up to the fence so we could pat them and see the lambs up close. On the way there, I managed to get a bit lost finding it, which was Google's fault, btw. We bought about $80 worth of cheese!
Then we drove over to the west end of the island to our new van park. There is a "koala walk" which is in the park and J & C rode their bikes around and found a koala! Numerous Tamar wallabies and kangaroo island kangaroos were also there. The public phone booth is in an old horse drawn bakers cart. As far as I can tell, there are only 2 families here at this park. Very quite again.
