I got a bit panicky while getting all packed and ready this morning. We had to do the grocery shopping, fill up the car and make the drive to Cape Jervis on time to take the ferry. The people from the ferry company have been a bit difficult to deal with so I was probably a bit primed to be nervous. But, we got it all done and arrived in good time. The car and van had to be backed onto the ferry - I let the crew do that! It was all good fun in the end - getting on a boat always is. We sat in the lounge and ate pies and sausage rolls. The crossing was flat and easy.
Kangaroo Island is rather big. The little town of Penneshaw where the boat pulls in is very pretty: hilly and green, perched on the edge of a bay. The drive to Kingscote, the 'capital', took about an hour. The landscape is fairly familiar in terms of plants but it's all rolling hills and every other turn reveals a view of the ocean. The van park here in Brownlow is old but okay and we are the only campers here! That's the first time that's happened.
We rode into Kingscote, which is a few kms along a beachside path. We saw NZ fur seals lying on the rocks. They were very close to us, only 5-10m. There was a baby one on the rocks and another one was playing in the water's edge. The jetty and rusty boat shed would be a perfect movie set. The town looked pretty sleepy.
Cold tonight so we light the fire in the camp kitchen area while playing the guitar. A movie in the van rounded out another good day.
