So last night we met up with our friends from the other charity in the town centre and decided to go for a drink. Not long after we all thought it was a great idea for us all to go to the fun fair close to our house so we all squashed in to a taxi and headed for the bright lights of the fair. To say the rides are unsafe would be an understatement.
The biggest ride which spins round and swings in the air also swayed on the bricks it was leaning on. Just as we got on they told me I was not allowed to ride as I was a lot taller than the others, and this was a Peruvian ride. This could have turned in to a Final Destination moment but luckily the others escaped the ride unscathed. From here we all climbed in to dodgem cars and prepared to crash into some locals. The siren went and all the cars sped off, except our cars. Nobody told the gringos you need a special type of token to ride, second walk of shame off a ride for me!
After a couple more rattling and bruising rides it was time to try and win some prizes. One of the guys from the other charity decided to play basketball and had to get 4 of 5 in. He missed the first, got the second but missed the third. Realising this meant he had lost, he span round and went to kick the air, however he didn't realise he had gathered a crowd around him and his foot landed perfectly on a young boys stomach, sending him through the air then tumbling to the ground. Very harsh but absolutely hilarious! This child is forever going to remember the night a giant gringo kicked him at the fair!
After all the excitement it was time to go home but when we got next to our house we heard loud music so went to explore and found the fiesta party in full swing and in no time I was dragged in to the centre of a dance circle by an elderly drunk Peruvian lady and was forced to dance. Everyone was drinking out of bottle and were more than merry, which was pretty surprising considering they were teachers at the local school and were due in class the next day! After all the fun of the night we eventually went home and to bed, however the party didn't finish until 3am so no sleep for us!
Today we started work at 8am on the building we are doing up. Today was the grass at the front of the building we attacked. We dug up all the weeds and raked to soil ready for putting plants and flowers in along with a fence. It's pretty exciting to see the progress of the building day by day and can't wait to see the finished project and the kids inside!
For lunch today to Slovakian nun invited us all to her house where we made homemade pizza and listened to stories of exorcisms and hauntings, pretty interesting whether you believe in it or not! This experience was only made better when the nun told us her favorite song is "Jesus Walks" by Kanye West!
This afternoon I spent working in the afterschool club with the kids. It's crazy the mix of ages, there was one girl who was only 2 years old just wandering round the centre giving people hugs! She constantly asked me for 'buela' which is basically a helicopter, spinning her round by the arms. She was very cute and couldn't say no and after the first time she began to walk off only to fall over a couple of times and walk in to a wall, pretty hilarious to see a dizzy 2 year old! Then she jumped into a table and began to cry, I take no responsibility for that!
The charity have recent started work on a new project in a local orphanage for children with aids and I really want to get involved so am going to visit tomorrow and see how I can help!
