We awoke this morning feeling tired and lazy and so we had no intention of having a long day. The plan was to wander around Nice and see what sites it had to offer and then go for a swim. After breakfast we walked down the Avenue Jean Jaures which is the main street in Nice. It has two trams that run down it which were only built this year. For 1 Euro you can ride to anywhere in Nice that the tram goes.
We continued to walk down Jean Jaures towards Place Massèna. Here they have street performers at night time and occasionally a small concert however we had a look at some of the fountains they had there. I would like to be able to give more information on the fountains in Place Massèna but I can't find anything anywhere.
From Place Massèna we walked down to the Beach. Running along side the beach there is a Promenade.
The Promenade des Anglais ("Walk of the English") is a celebrated promenade along the Mediterranean at Nice. Before Nice was urbanized, the coast at Nice was just bordered by a deserted band of beach covered by large pebbles. The first houses were located on higher ground well away from the sea.
Starting in the second half of the 18th century, the English took to spending the winter in Nice, enjoying the panorama along the coast. When a particularly harsh winter up north brought an influx of beggars to Nice, some of the rich Englishmen proposed a useful project for them: the construction of walkway (chemin de promenade) along the sea.
We walked along the promenade towards the Parc de la Colline du Chàteau. After walking up about 4 flights of stairs we came to the observation deck. From here you could see all the way long Nice Beach and the Promenade right the way round to Antares. It was a beautiful sight...
From the observation deck we continued our way up the hill to the summit where we found a small man made waterfall and a park that contained a small football-pitch, running track, playground and a cafe.
We took a few photos of the Port of Nice from there and then decided to lay under the trees for a rest. Laura read her book and I had a snooze for around an hour until the hunger pains that signal lunch kicked in. We decided to go back to the hostel and have some lunch before coming back for a swim later this afternoon so Laura didn't get too burn't.
We bought some sandwichs from the local supermarket and some hot chips from KFC (no seasoning though!) and headed back to the hostel for lunch. Afterwards Laura had a quick nap whilst I caught up on some computer stuff.
We headed for the beach around 3.30 and had to pick our way between all the leather skins, topless sunbakers and fat guys in speedos to find a spot on the beach. The beach being small stones is not the most comfortable thing ever to lay on and it makes it really difficult to stand in the water as well. You could easily tell the tourists as they were the ones that looked really uncomfortable.
After about an hour and a half we headed back to the hostel and Laura washed her hair whilst I started to make some pasta for dinner. After dinner we decided to call it a night as we were on our way to Monte Carlo tomorrow!
