The first bus from Kasane was a mini bus and halfway to Nata a tire blew and was left on the road behind us. There was no spare and we had to drive the rest of the way on five wheels. The locals seemed more concerned than me and Keeley. We made it unscathed to Nata and onto another bus to Maun.
In Maun we went to the SPA to buy our cider and beer before heading to the backpackers. The Old Bridge Backpackers was very nice set right beside the river, the pool was a bit of a joke only about 4 meters long. We stayed in a little dome tent much much cheaper than in Kasane. That night we met a couple Dan and Rachel and decided to book a Mokoro trip into the delta with them the day after tomorrow.
We went to do our shopping for our two day trip with Dan and Rachel. It took some time so then we went back to the Bridge and had a few cold beers it is hot here.
The Mokoro trip started with a boat ride down the river which was very nice had a cooling breeze. We got on to the Mokoros (dug out canoes) we had chairs with our mattresses on very comfy. Our guide had to stand at the back poling. We spent a nice hour and half two hours poling through the Okavango Delta. We stopped at an island and unloaded the gear to be told we were staying for four hours in the camp to siesta. Not much shade very, very hot no way we could sleep. This was not so much fun we played the alphabet animal game to pass time. We did persuade the guides to take us somewhere for a swim to cool down somewhere without crocodiles or hippos. The swim was very refreshing and we wered in a much better mood back at camp. We had a short walk before making dinner and having some wine. We had a very good night good food, good wine and good company. However the Mosies were out in force I got bitten lots and so did Keeley. I am used to it now they seem to like my blood, Keeley not so used to it and was not very happy.
We had a four hour game walk in the morning. The Okanavango Delta is beautiful and it is a wilderness. This meant that the game was scattered and often far away. We saw antelope, giraffes, warthogs and a jackel but not much game. The highlight was a tortoise the first one I have seen in the wild. This was all about appreciating the natural beauty. The heat soon wore us down and we were happy to be back at camp and going for another swim. I think with out the swims all four of us would of died. We poled back through the delta I do enjoy travel in a wooden canoe when I do not have to do any work. On the boat ride back we spotted a crocodile our first in the delta and some good birdlife. When we were handed complementary beers we could say that the boat ride was the best part of the trip. We also had the added excitement of luggage falling overboard we managed to collect it before it sank. Back at the Oldbridge we were upgraded for free to a big tent with beds and electricity for the next two nights great news as the dome tent was far to hot.
Today we went into town did some shopping were going to go to a wildlife sanctuary but eneded up back at the Oldbridge. That night we met some South Africans who surveyed sights for phone masts and stayed up very late drinking with them. They were staying at a lodge owned by the Old Bridge. After the bar closed we headed back there for more drink. The place was beautiful massive rooms a real swimming pool. At about half two after finishing all there was to drink we decided to go and get our bags and bring them to the lodge. This was so we could set off early the next day as they had offered us a lift to Ghanzi our next stop before Windhoek. The drive back took forever as we hit as few bushes and kept driving in circles luckly no one else was on the roads. We did manage it althrough the Old Bridge did think 2.30 am a strange time to check out.
