This past weekend was our first weekend in Innsbruck. We decided to take it easy and only take a day trip to Salzburg on Saturday. Sunday it rained ALL day and was so cold that everyone just slept late and relaxed.
Friday a big group of us went to dinner in Old Town and then out to the Irish Pub where most students who stayed in town met us for drinks. Dinner was a great outdoor restaurant where we could people watch and enjoy Innsbruck's square. Innsbruck is pretty small so just sitting outside we ran into a lot of other students. After dinner we went to the Irish Pub and had a great time. This will probably be one of the weekends so many of us stayed in town. Now every weekend the majority of us will be travelling.
SALZBURG - Saturday we took a train and spent the day in Salzburg. We got in around 1:30 and walked to the city center where most of the sights are located. Walking 30 minutes is starting to feel normal. We didn't pay for any public transportation that day even when it started raining. The first hour was really warm then the clouds started rolling in and it got cold. We were still able to go up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Work on the fortress was started in 1077 and ended in 1681. This is the largest completely preserved castle left in central Europe. It is huge and looms over Salzburg. It was like another city within the fortress walls and the views of Salzburg are amazing. We also saw the Salzburg Dom (cathedral) that is known for the 4,000 pipe organ and the place where Mozart was baptized.
After seeing Mozart's statue and where he lived we headed to the Augustiner Braustuberl (beer garden). The place got its name from an old Augustinan monastery. It has served beer since 1622. It was huge and very efficient. As you walk in you see a dozen kiosks with a variety of food. Then you take your own mug, rinse it pay and then fill it at the beer tap. There are big halls or an outdoor patio where you can sit and drink/eat. If you are ever in Salzburger I highly recommend checking it out.
After that we walked back to the train station and headed to Innsbruck. We got in around 11pm and were exhausted. Sunday was a cold and rainy day.
Monday was cold and rainy too but we had to get ready and go to a farewell reception for Chief Justice Roberts. We all got our pictures taken with Chief Justice Roberts in groups but we have to buy those so we weren't allowed to take our own pictures of him. It was a nice hotel and from there we headed to the Innsbruck Casino. I didn't gamble it was really nice but Vegas is more fun.
So now it's Tuesday and I have to go study for my Supreme Court final tomorrow. Have a good day!
