Too Cold For Penguins
Hello
We have had a manic few days since leaving Nazca. We set off from Nazca 2 hours late on an overnight bus to Arequipa. The journey was about 9 hours long and was an experience to say the least. Both of us have been ill the last few days, and this did not make the journey any more enjoyable. Once arriving in Arequipa we tried 4 hostels before finding a decent one.
From what we saw of Arequipa it looks very nice, we only stayed for the one night as we had a flight booked to Cusco this morning. However we will return to Arequipa again before leaving Peru.
Cusco is the main tourist city in Peru and from what we have seen of it so far we can see why. The main reason for us to get here so soon is the Festival of the Sun (Inti Raymi) which is tomorrow and we are really looking forward to seeing that. There has also been some celebrations today and the traditional clothing, music and dancing is fantastic!
We have now been here for a week and what a great week it has been. Throughout the week we have made some observations of Peru:
- For a car to be roadworthy all you need is a working horn
- Everything is very cheap but nowhere seems to have change
- You need a cast iron stomach
- Its easier if you can speak Spanish but its fun trying
- You need warm clothes
- Everyone is a tour operator, you can buy water, a loaf of bread and a flight over the Nazca lines all from one street stall
- Don't just assume it's chicken (we haven't seen any cats yet!)
Keep in touch
