A great day of serving by painting...even if the colors weren't the best!
Zona Colonial, Dominican Republic
We moved from the rich of the poor to the poor of the poor today and through the meandering, pot-holed filled roads; saw first had how the less-well-to-do lived in the Dominican. Upon on arrival at the site, we walked across a garbage filled ditch with non-potable water--an uncomfortable sight for most of the team.
We quickly unloaded and set up our site for the day and jumped in to our painting task at hand. We strategically approached the work and compliments to Debra (narrow side wall and short ladder duty), Taylor (getting all of the high spots) and Alice (high ladder duty) for their extra efforts today. Unfortunately, the colors that were selected were something of an eye sore -- green and gold, oh my....he he.
As the day went, we soon became inspired by homeowner Pedro Pablo (Peter Paul) and his desire to work along side us to make his home beautiful. Paul (yep, still with us) and Roberto (Habitat engineer) participated in a bit of sumo wrestling and many packs of Oreo's were shared with the local children. By the end of the day, we once again felt we had gained more ourselves than we had given in labor as we continue to serve our Dominican partners. Even Barb's mothering ended in laughter during dinner tonight!
Tomorrow, we head back to the same area to paint another home with hopes of inspiring others to take pride in their home. The Dominican Habitat affiliate has a goal of rehabbing/painting 800 homes this year and we are the first team here this year!
