We were all in (see photo) for our last work day with Habitat Dominican! We started the day by splitting into two groups, with 3 of us remaining at yesterday's site to finish painting the neighbor's house and the rest of the team moving to a new house today.
At this previous site, a 2-3 year old girl was crying tremendously and her mother asked her what was wrong -- she was upset because she thought she had missed seeing the Americans today (as we told her we were coming back). Her mother then walked her over to us and the crying turned to a sad lip and finally the crying stopped as she realized she hadn't missed us! Amazing the one day impact on the kids in these areas.
It has become apparent that we have brought attention to these communities through Habitat and the neighborhood comes to see what is happening when we are around. This kind of attention inspires others in the community to join in and serve one another. We even got a chance to play baseball and catch with the kids!
After finishing up our 4th house this week, we had a celebration with the last three families in attendance. It all came home for us when one owner talked about how she went from living in dirt and mud to her 'dream home'. We've learned a bunch about the Dominican this week, but I think we all learned as much about ourselves.
We wrapped up the day with an American dinner of Pizza Hut of all places! Tomorrow is our last day as a team, taking a tour of some caves and spending time at the beach before our final team dinner. Our Dominican affiliate Natalie has been with us every step of the way and has made this a wonderful experience for us all! We recommend this trip for anyone that would consider it!
