The travelling time from Palawan direct to Boracay would take around 40minutes by air. Unfortunately you must fly to Manila first, and then get a connecting flight to Caticlan, which is a 10minute boat trip away from Boracay. It isn't to bad.....
Our flight times however, meant that we had our 1 hour flight to Manila, and 5 hour wait to connect, then another 1 hour flight to Caticlan before getting on the boat to cross the water. Nightmare. It would literally take all day...
This nightmare got even worse, as our flight was delayed, then further delayed, then cancelled, then finally re-routed to Kalibo airport, the budget airport, the airport we could have flown to for a fraction of the price, and the airport which is an additional 1hr 30mins away from Caticlan. It was like a scene out of 'Airport' on ITV, apart from everyone was shouting at a little Philippino instead of that fat Jeremy fella....
We finally reached Boracay just before midnight, after starting at 7am from Palawan. We had taken a tricycle, a proper aeroplane then a sort of smarties tube with a propeller and wings, a minivan, a boat and finally another tricycle and a walk to get to our hotel. Our slightly tired, warn out, but quite charming beach front hotel.
At this point, we weren't too fusy...
Boracay is a really cool laid back island, with the most stunning strip of White sand and aqua water beach that ive ever come across.
There are lines of bars, cafes, restuarants and hotels all the way down the beach, make it too easy and convenient to ever leave the sand.
We knew we only had a few days and then we had to leave, so we spent our time using Boracay as our final little mini holiday, waving goodbye to Asia and preparing for Australia which was just around the corner...
We enjoyed more sunbathing, big long walks, we drank local spirits while in the sea and we ate proper nice seafood at night.
Boracay is one of the places where it is hard to ever leave the beach, where the lifestyle is chilled and not much actually gets done...
My idea of heaven.
We met some really awesome people who were saying near by us, who enjoyed all of the above with us and made our visit even more fun.
Boracay is very commercial, but don't let that put you off.
We feel so lucky to have visited Palawan and then Boracay, the bar is certainly raised and expectations for any future beach holiday are high!
The Philippines has been an incredible experience. For me, the best part of the trip yet.
I think as McThialand becomes Benidorm, the Philippines will begin to florish further and become the new fashionable place for backpackers to visit.
It isn't the easiest or cheapest place to get to or around, which i think currently puts backpackers off visisting, but in the future, I'm sure this will change.
I just hope the place keeps it's identity and doesn't sell itself out.
We are nearly at the end of our Asian experience.
With just a few days in KL and Singapore to go, we can't believe how quick this 4 months has gone!
Oz is just around the corner!!
Peace and worn out flip flops
