So our thinking was we would try out the hopefully quiter and more 'Balinese' Legian for our final two nights, instead of the other option of going back to Kuta again which is also near the airport....
This place was possibly the worst place we have both ever been too. And keeping in mind Katie spent a great deal of time in Malia when she was younger, you are probably getting an idea of quite how 'un-balinese' and horrendously 18-30s this place was...
It was neighbours to Kuta, but more accurately than neighbours, it was like the slightly poorer and much seeder uncle of Kuta who only gets invited to family doos when you really feel you have to invite them, but apart from those occassions, you avoid them..... We should have avoided Legian.
Especially after leaving our beautiful little fishing village of Amed. We felt like rabbits in headlights slighlty and spent a great deal of the first day in our hostel room reading books we picked up from the local book trade. At least people here can read. Apparently.....
The evening was spent taking a long walk, soaking up the 'culture', ignoring the balinese shop assistants shouting, "g'day mate" mistaking us for one of many thousand Ozzies, and saying no, politely at first, to drug dealers at the side of the road offering me rubbish excuses, almost offensive excuses for cocaine, and then, probably even more offensively, offering me Viagra.... Only the best of drugs on offer in Legian. I was waitingfor a man with no teeth to offer me a dirty rock of crack and top off the awesome experience... This was Legian...
The only part of Legain that made us stop and look for the right reasons was the beautiful memorial which was 'errected' (Viagra joke there...) right in the middle of the main strip in respect for all thoser who died during the street bombing incident when a series of suicide bombers and a series of car bombs and attacks occurred on October 1, 2005. The attack claimed the lives of 20 people and injured more than 100 others. The three bombers also died in the attacks.
Nice Irish Bar next door.......
Anyways, we managed to walk all the way from Legian to Kuta square, central Kuta without even realising, which spured us on the next night to do the same again and spend our final evening splashing out slighlty on cocktails and fancy(ish) food!!
We will miss Bali, it has been the greatest start to our adventure, and as we close this primary chapter on our trip, we are preparing for life back in Thailand.......
