So apparently the food poisoning hasn't gone.......
I've never been so ill than when I was in Phonm penh.
Poor Katie was left to do everything alone as I spent all my time in the hostel room, slowly disappearing!
I lost 2 stone, ribs were visible through my back and my arms and legs look like those of a 14 year old.
I was given some crazy strong antibiotics which seemed to do the trick, and this was all a few days ago now and all seems ok now.....
I prospect of going to a Cambodian hospital was not one I was relishing.
I managed to leave the room and join Katie for a visit to the killing fields, which was one of the most horrific things I've ever seen. Just the idea of what had happened and the signs that show the brutality of genocide still so apparent, it makes it hard to speak.
People walk around in silence listening to their headphones you are given to listen to.
I took mine off at one point, the whole place was totally silent, just the sound of feet walking over and crushing leaves, and any bones that may have risen to the surface.
Clothes still in the ground, teeth that have risen to the surface by all the rain, blood stains still on trees where heads of young children and babies have been swung and crushed against.
Scars of the sadness and murders deep into the soil, rising to the surface as a constant reminder of the huge loss of life.
You can feel the suffering in the air and still almost hear the screaming.
We also visited the S21 museum, which was a school turned prison by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Equally brutal place to visit. Classrooms turned into cells and climbing frames turned into torture bars.
Barbed wire surrounding all high walls to prevent prisoners from committing suicide.
Graves and tomb stones in the playground.
Strange to think when looking down from your hotel balcony that only 30 years ago Phnom Penh was cleared by Khmer Rouge, everyone shot dead or evacuated into the farm land and killing fields. then landmines placed in the city for anyone who tried to hide and stay put.
We had to miss out on our few days on the beaches as i was too ill to catch the bus, so we are heading to Siem Reap next, mainly to see Ankor Wat and all the temples.......
More bloody temples......
Anyways, until next time
Peace and antibiotics
Nic and Katie xx
