Zoe and Ed's Travels
We are in Kandy where we arrived yesterday from Ella. We spent a day in Ella, which is a small village up in the hills in the centre of the island. It's a bit of a backpacker hangout. We enjoyed relaxing there for a day, and did a little walk up one of the local hills from where there were good views of the area. We also had some excellent food: in particular a fantastic assortment of curries including a garlic curry and an excellent pineapple chutney.
From Ella we got the train to Kandy. It's a scenic trip that winds through the hills, although a little long at nearly 7 hours. We have had a busy day in an around Kandy today. We started out at 6.30 this morning (which was a bit of a shock for us) and got the bus out to the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnewala. We got there in time to see the elephants feeding, including bottle feeding of the young orphans, and then watched them as they splashed around in the river. This afternoon we have been in Kandy itself where we visited the "Temple of the Tooth", which allegedly has one of the Buddha's teeth in a small gold casket (which is in a larger gold casket, in a larger gold casket...in a larger gold casket, in a room which we can't see behind a closed door behind a curtain - make your own mind up).
Tomorrow we are heading north to Dambulla where there are some ancient cave temples. We will also use it as a base for visiting Sigiriya and (maybe) Pollonoruwa, two of the ancient cities of northern Sri Lanka.
