Ziggy's Travels
Slept in and then went out with Kevin and a bunch of people to wander the streets and shop. We took the subway to Hui Ko Road. Lots of small shops and department stores – nothing too exciting. Kevin and I split off and went to the Shanghai Museum. Student prices were five yuan (cheap). Kevin didn't have his student ID so I told him to just give them his California drivers license thinking that they wouldn’t know the difference. In perfect English the women at the counter said, "This is a driver’s license" and handed it back. Oh well, nice try anyway. Kevin was ****** about having to pay the full 20 yuan price (but then we realized it was only about $2.50!). Did a real quick walk through. It was a very nice museum (with great air conditioning). We saw some really old jade statues from the 22nd century BC. Later, we went out for a diner for 12 with Mike Liu. One last authentic Chinese feast! It was very good and again only $10 including drinks. Back to the hotel to digest and then on to Shanghai Sally’s to meet the rest of the group. My plan to beat jet lag was to stay awake all night and sleep from Seoul to LA. Shanghai Sally’s was cool, but again appeared to be an ex-patriot bar. There was a Reggae band from Zaire playing (although not that well) on the stage. I was struck by a very international feeling; we were Americans in Shanghai at a bar owned by an Englishman listening to a band from Zaire. I felt like I was in Casablanca or something. At 1:00am we took off for Young Young’s to do some dancing. It was much less crowded than the previous Saturday. Maybe because we got there so much later. We danced a bit and Jen got up on stage again (she did this last time in front of about 500 people). This time we all joined her up there and danced until the place emptied out. We met an English guy who DJ’d there and he recommended another club called DD’s. Took a cab there but they wanted 100 yuan for cover – not at 3:30 in the morning, thank you – so we piled back into the taxi’s and headed home. I still wanted to stay up all night so six of us went to the hotel’s 24 hour café and hung out for an hour then went up to Kevin and Mike’s room. A couple more beers and some TV but then Kevin and Mike crashed. Only Allen (who had returned form his date with the Bank of China translator) and I were still up. I decided to get an hour or so of sleep and went to bed at 6:00am.
