Woke up around 5:00am, definitely poured down rain last night. The one end of the tent was completely soaked. Where my feet were. i decided I would wAke up and pack everything up. not realizing it was still dark outside . Took me longer than I thought . got everything in the Jeep and decided to drive towards the falls which was located 18 miles away. Where I had made the mistake of going lastnight, where I thought my campsite was. I started the drive and it began to pour down rain, so I found a small restaurant and went I. And sat, charged my phone and ate a delicious breakfast. Two eggs, Sausage, Bacon, Shredded potatoes, Pancakes, and toast. I ate it all. Must have been hungry to say the least. I ended up staying there for two hours until it quit raining.
I then began my drive to the falls and was able to stop and catch a a delightful sunrise on the lake. Pretty awesome views. I arrived at lower part of tahquamenon falls. Since it had rained the water seemed to flowing a lot faster than normal. Nice boardwalk trail out along the river to the falls. It was so quiet here too. Then I got back in the Jeep and drove 4 miles to the upper Falls which was amazing , with the leaves changing it made for a very picturesque drive. The Upper Falls is one the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across. A maximum flow of more than 50,000 gallons of water per second. these Falls were awesome. With the fall colors in the landscape I got some great photos. Did about 3 miles of hiking around the upper and lower Falls.
after leaving the Falls I continued along the coast of Lake superior . Stopping at pictured rocks National lake shore. Viewing Miners castle and Miners Beach. So beautiful here. Very cool to see the rock formations along the lake. Saw an old fire truck along the way and stopped and climbed all over it like a child, made me smile.
I stopped a few times and took pictures along the lake and even caught a double rainbow. There was a large oil tanker in the bay. Apparently that is rare to see. So I had the pleasure of witnessing that too.
I made it to McLain state park around 8:30pm and got my tent set up and made my way to the showers . I was starting to smell. The facilities were very clean and nice. Once i got back to the tent I crawled in. It sounded like a hurricane out there , the waves crashing into the side of the shore. Might have been crazy camping so close to the lake this time of year. The temperature dropped to 48 degrees overnight.
