Day 10....
Oct 9 2019
Slept in today, woke up around 7:00am and got in the shower. It was nice not have to walk what always seemed like mile to a bathroom or shower at a campground and I was dry, no wet feet.
I made a cup of coffee and just sat on the couch and reflected on the last few days, it was nice not feeling like I had to be anywhere.
I did decdide to check out downtown Des Moines. Started by finding a place to have a late breakfast. I found this place called Mullets that was located right on the Des Moines river. Walked In and it was filled with old license plates and a nice bar. Small but comfortable place. I the Breakfast meatloaf. Wow was this a great choice it was a great concoction made of sausage/beef eggs, onions, peppers and potatoes. With sausage gravy on top. It was delicious. After that I parked downtown and strolled down the Main Street and viewed the capitol building and Some other neat buildings.
I then left downtown and took a drive to the town of newton. Where I found a cheese factory. Was greeted by this sweet old lady. She was my tour guide for the next 35 minutes. The tour took me through the cheese making process, each of there special blue-cheese block is individually wrapped by hand. Most blue cheese comes from goats milk, but this company has proudly made this rich delicious blue geese from Holsteins. it was funny as I walked through the tour. The workers were smiling and waving at me, blowing me kisses all old ladies. Haha . It made me laugh and smile. At the end of the tour I was able to sample some cheese it was so good. they produce a lot of different varieties of cheese but known for there blue cheese. They also grow ears of popcorn in there fields and harvest it and sell the cornels to make popcorn. If your ever in IowA cruising on I-80 stop at Maytag Farms. Take the tour and eat some cheese.
After leaving there here I made my way back downtown to Des Moines but I took some back roads which were dirt that is where I got the feel of the Midwest, dozens of combines in the fields harvesting there soybeans and corn. It was so awesome watching these farmers.
One ne I reached downtown Des Moines I stopped at West End Salvage . This was in an old brick building downtown. So neat, you walk inside and it is full of antiques of yesteryear. 4 floors of all kinds of cool things that brings back the past. They have a cafe on the first floor that you can order a beer and walk around and enjoy it as you look at all the oddities and treasures. Really neat place. Even had a large service elevator in the middle that was original to the building and that how they get items to the upper floors. The staff was So friendly informative about the items they had. So glad I stopped there.
Got back to Kerry and Jenn’s. Was able to do some laundry and hangout. We then all went downtown and found a cool rest to dine at. another old building that was repurposed. So cool. We ate at the Iowa Tap Room. It had a large round grain silo cut in half and the bar surrounded it , it had 100 taps around it. So neat. I ordered the Confluence Oktoberfest and a Meatloaf Sandwhich. It was good too. I must say I have been well. Not gonna loose any weight if I keep this up .
We got back to the house and sat and watched my cousins band Capyac and his funny but good music videos. On YouTube tv. It was fun to relax and chat and laugh. All in all it was great to be here and visit with family for a few days. back on the road in the morning.
