We caught a 5am bus from Flores Guatemala to Belize City across the border. Belize City was not very nice and it's very dangerous so we didn’t leave the ferry terminal where the bus dropped us off. We then caught a ferry to Caye Caulker 30mins away. On the ferry on the way over to start with the water was disgusting and brown around the port but in about 5 mins it changed instantly to a beautiful crystal clear Caribbean green colour. It was pretty amazing to see. The island had a really great feel to it, sandy streets, old shack houses and plenty of seafood restaurants.
The first day there we met up with some locals and they took us out fishing. We hired kayaks which Junior and I had quite a few problems keeping straight which was pretty funny, and paddled out around the point where we found this jetty. We jumped out and started fishing. Junior and the locals where great pulling in fish but the rest of the group and I had problems. They don’t really fish for the future here, they were keeping them all while we kept saying throw it back but by that time it was too late and it was dead. I can kind of understand they don’t have much money and every fish they keep is a meal but I think they will be struggling in a few years. It started raining quite heavy but we still keep fishing away and just got soaking wet. Lucky it was so warm.
I think we ended up with about 10 fish so we went back to a restaurant and the kitchen cooked them up for us for lunch and then dinner as well. It was really good. Even at night Juanita and Dave (a couple we met in Flores) joined us for dinner. There was so much and it was so good.
The next day we booked a tour to dive at the world’s largest blue hole, which is a massive underwater sinkhole. The hole is near perfectly circular in shape, more than 305m across and 146m deep and about 2.5hours from Caye Caulker. For millions of years the Blue Hole was a dry cave in which massive stalactites and stalagmites slowly formed. When the last ice age ended the sea levels rose to cover the cave, then an earthquake caved in the roof so now you can dive in it.
The day was looking a bit grey and we were headed out to sea following the storm and it was rough. We all got on the boat and some started reading and some lying down which was all good until we got past the breakwaters then it turned rough for about 1 hour until we got to a small group of islands. It was so rough people were getting thrown everywhere. Within the islands it calmed down and we stopped for a toilet stop and water and then headed off again for another 1.5 hours in even rougher seas. It was crazy. I was sitting at the very back of the boat where it wasn’t as bumpy and where I could hold on but I was getting wet from rain and then really wet from the seawater flying into the boat. Every few seconds it felt like a bucket of water getting thrown on me. It was pretty funny to see.
Finally we got out there and did the first dive which was 40m deep inside the blue hole on the edge where we could see stalactite and stalagmite formations. We stayed down at 40m for about 8 mins and then started swimming up where we spotted about 5 sharks swimming around in the hole which was awesome. They were friendly sharks. At the safety stop we could see these massive grouper around 1.5m long and 1m around. They were huge.
After the first dive the coast guard had told a smaller boat to go back to shore as a tropical storm was coming. This made us all a bit scared so we hurried through the last 2 dives and headed back to the island.
The crayfish season started while we were there so every restaurant had awesome crays for $10 including all sides and a few drinks. It was so good and just so cheap.
The weather stayed the same over the next day so we decided to move onto Mexico as an island isn’t the best fun when it rains all day. We caught a boat and bus from Caye Caulker to Tulum, Mexico.
