Noosa to Cairns
Wednesday 17th December to Tuesday 23rd December
Rockhampton – Capricorn Dave
It was a 400km drive from Noosa to Rockhampton for our Capricorn Dave adventure. So after a long drive on Wednesday 17th we finally arrived at a very posh big 4 campsite had some tea before getting some shut eye ready for our big day out!
So Thursday 18th December was our day out with Capricorn Dave who entertained the Wildboyz (Steve-O and mate) on a similar day out for MTV. It was a beautiful day and we headed off into the wilderness and the start of crocodile country. We went for a walk along a billabong looking for snakes in the trees and around the waters edge we found no snakes however did find a wolf spider and this cool little burrowing frog dave picked them both up for us to get a proper look at which was wicked. We then went looking for huntsmen spiders in this big creepy old looking tree but none there and instead found some cool red tailed black cockatoos.
We had lunch in a proper aussie outback pub was cool before going for a swim in a billabong and checking out some of the huge cattle like the one in Crocodile Dundee. In the afternoon our first snake dodged us and we found another spider this time was a Devils spider named so because of the horns protruding from its back. Lastly was the ant dance we found a ants nest of meat ants huge little b*****s and the idea is to bounce up and down on the nest to get them agitated and then stand there let them climb all over your feet and bite you feels a bit like pins and needles. Tired and exhausted we made it back to the campervan had a cold rock and watched the third Harry Potter film.
Driving days
We had a look around the council run free Rockhampton zoo in the morning at the botanical gardens was awful should be shut down but hey what can you do, some of the cages and enclosures were just awful. We left Rockhampton fairly early because we had another mammoth drive up to Eungella national park to look for platypus. We got to the campsite with a whisper of petrol left in the van and there were loads of cane toads about (introduced pest). Drove 600kms
On Saturday 20th December we started with an unsuccessful attempt to find the platypus’s which are extremely hard to spot in the wild anyways. We then just made it to the nearest petrol station some 55kms away. Before driving the relatively short distance to Airlie beach the place were everyone goes to the Whitsundays from. The weather to the north was not looking good so we decided to stay for the night and had our first proper jacket spud for 8 or so months was really nice. We then done the last of the Christmas shopping and got a gameboy DS for entertainment. In the nighttime at the campsite we had a BBQ, went for a dip in the pool complete with slides and went looking for tree frogs which we found 2 off a little one and this huge one was wicked!
We drove to Innasfal on Sunday 21st December another 650kms north but getting us ever closer to our aim of Cairns for xmas. Along the way we passed the big Mango which was cool.
