Today we checked out of our hotel at 7:30 am, in order to catch a flight from Nha Trang to Hoi An. Once in Hoi An, we went for lunch at Bale Well. This was probably once of the best eats I have had since being here. They brought out a mound of food, which included pork skewers, spring rolls, lettuce, cucumber, and egg omeletes - all of these ingredients were to go inside rice paper, and then eaten. This was then followed by dessert, which was chocolate or mango mousse and some ripe pineapple. The ladies that brought us food were great, as they helped us roll/create our lunches. As well as, they also hand feed some people food and gave one of the other travellers a back massage and hugged/shaked our hands when we left. I highly recommend going to this restaurant if you are in Hoi An!
After lunch we stopped off and looked at a few of the road side stores. Tried on a couple of dresses, but not that many fit. All of the ladies told me that they could tailor make a dress that I liked, but since we were planning on going to the tailors later that day there was no point. I did pick up a dress for 200,000 dong = $10; I was able to barter for it and knock 100,000 dong off the total price. First time bartering, but it went so so. It is interesting to see what the owners do, since we are in groups - if one traveller gets a discount and the next traveller tries, the owners will tend to lie to the next person and say "I gave so and so a discount because they have been here before, but I haven't seen you before so no discount," when it is both of our first times at the store. Others will actually chase you down and try and get you to purchase their item at your asking price; pleading you to make a purchase. It is quite different. As a customer you want to get a lower price but then you also feel guilty of taking away some of their income; especially, since their income is substaintially lower than ours.
After shopping, we walked three blocks down from our hotel room and picked out bikes for our ride. The ride was slightly unenjoyable in the beginning, since we had to bike on the same road that was shared by hondas and cars.

Painter Every time you write about all the great food you're eating I become ravenous and think I need to go out to the Pho restaurant by Kingsway. Please pay lots of attention when you go to your cooking classes so you can whip up a storm when you get home. The bike ride sounds scary! There wouldn't be any way I'd get on a bike and wobble through traffic and around pedestrians. You're either a very brave soul or haven't learned how to say "No Way!! Love keeping up with your adventures!
Ian Do you find your picking up a bit of an accent? Are you starting to pick up on some of the language? But sounds like some good eats. Send some by mail this way :)
Paula Yeah, so far I haven't had a disappointing dish, except the one hotel we stayed at made the omelettes too runny for my liking. But I'll try and take photos of the food we have then you can see what it looks like. I think from what I have heard, we get a recipe book and a knife that cuts fruits/veggies after the cooking class. Lol, not sure about me picking up any accents though. I do remember xin chao = hello and come on = thank you. Not sure if the food would make it back tasting and smelling as good as it does after I send it through the mail to you.. Just means you have to come to Vietnam to experience the food yourself.. Ha ha
Ian A knife? Really ? Let's hope you can bring that back into the country. Just hide it in a shoe :) But guess maybe I should book a plan ticket See you tomorrow then :)
Paula Ok, so I lied a bit.. it is more like a veggie knife, where there are 4-5 little loops on the end of a bamboo stick and it then shreds the veggies into thin slices... not sure if that helps at all..so it shouldn't be considered as a dangerous weapon.. lets hope. OK! It is very hot here, so pack lots of shorts and tank tops and then let me know where and when you are arriving! he
