'Alternative tour to Perito Moreno Glacier' today. This takes a different route to the glacier with a wildlife focus and you do a short hike on the way. Unfortunately our tour guide seemed to be new and didn't know where the hike was meant to finish and so walked further than intended which we didnt mind at all. Anyway this was a good, low key way to have our first sight of the glacier. Then we joined the crowds at the main viewing area. It's busy , as the glacier is the only one in the world that you can simply drive to, but it's well managed so there was plenty of space. We had been concerned that the experience wouldn't compare to the impossibly beautiful images we'd seen on postcards, but it did. It's stunningly beautiful, peaks of blue and white going off into the distance like some kind of abstract art. Every now and then there are groans and crunching sounds from the ice as it moves, and sometimes a section breaks off and crashes into the lake below which is great to watch. It's one of the few in the world still advancing. It's hard to get a sense of scale from the photos but it's about the height of a 20 storey building.
As part of the package we went on a boat trip which takes you to within 30m of the south face. This enables you to see into the crevasses, which are the most beautiful blue. Again, very photogenic so we now have enough photos of ice peaks and blue crevices to fill our own art gallery!
Had to try the ice-cream here which is made with calafate berries.
Ice-cream count 3 each.
