The section of ripio from the cabanas to the border was fairly wild, up mountain sides and round hairpin bends. We saw condors and wild horses. Then across the border and back into Argentina. We have loved Chile and it has been great to be driving through the Andes themselves rather than just having them as a backdrop, which they will be when we get back onto Ruta 40. The difference was noticeable straight away, because the lake is shared between the two nations. Here it is called Lago Buenos Aires. We lay by it in the sun this afternoon and while it's pretty it's nowhere near as dramatic- it's surrounded by hills rather than jagged mountains with glaciers. We'll get back to that kind of scenery in a couple of days but for now it's back onto Ruta 40 and a very different type of drive. We're off to Perito Moreno in the morning to make sure we have plenty of petrol and water for the trip as the roads will be long and empty. We are aware that they are trying to pave the road in sections but can't tell how far they've got with this yet...
