In the 3rd week the most significant event was climb up Ungalan mountain in Semarang.
We set off just after midday with our sleeping bags strapped to our day sacks, two 200ml bottles of water each and 3 tents between the 7 of us. Me, Mark and Will were left carrying the tents!
We were walking into a constant incline, through the thick jungle, a labyrinth or tea trees and as we climbed higher, almost vertical rocky faces!
As well as our group of 7, our 'navigator' Nas invited 8 of his uni friends to join us on the trek - just to clarify, Nas was not a navigator, despite having done the same walk 5 times before he still didn't know the way. I soon got fed up with the constant stopping and starting and the appalling fitness level of Nas's friends that i took the lead.
Just after lunch we got caught in a monsoon and ran for shelter in a nearby Mosque where we had to sit out the down-poor for just over an hour. Once the rain finally gave way to sunshine we prepared ourselves for the hardest part of the climb. However eyebrows were raised and concerns were voiced when Nas informed us that the next part of the climb was almost vertical and we would be on our hands and knees climbing over wet rocks and slippery mud. A couple of people in the group were concerned that it was too dangerous to continue, granted it had just rained a good 10cm, our navigator was useless, there was no first aid, mobiles were out of range and there was no way of getting help if it was needed it.
I was gutted at the prospect of not being able to complete the trek and tried my best to persuade the rest of the group to finish the walk. Luckily for me Nas didn't give anyone a choice and so we had to continue the walk!
In the last push to get to the top we were walking in darkness with only 3 torches between 7 of us. I was up ahead leading with Mark as we tried to navigate our way over the huge wet rocks one by one. I'd climb my way up first taking the torch with me and then turn around to give Mark some light so he could do the same.
Every time we though we were almost at the top we had to go just a bit further and a little bit more, until finally we reached the top! We were exhausted, but what a sense of achievement when we reached the top! We could see for miles all around and sparkling cities 2050 below, it was a cracking view! Once everyone else reached the top we quickly pitched all the tents, had a bowl full of hot noodles and went to bed. It got to 3am when we realised that Nas and his friends had no intention of going to bed. We also realised that we had perhaps chosen the rockiest part of the peak to pitch our tent on.
So as you can imagine we were furious, tired and very grumpy and despite politely asking Nas and his friends to keep the noise down, they kept on throughout the whole night and early morning. it also didn't help that they were drowning the fire in petrol to keep it going which unnerved us slightly as it was particularly close to our tent!
it was no good, i couldn't sleep. All that was left for me to do was to go and join them.
After a spectacular sunrise and absolutely no sleep we began the walk back down the mountain. Once again i was leading up front with Mark and a few of Nas's faster friends and a speedy pace so it didn't take us long to lose the rest of the group. Just as we made it down to the labyrinth of tea trees the heavens opened and we were once again monsooned on. This time there was no nearby mosque that we could use for shelter and so we just had to accept the fact that we were going to get absolutely drenched - and we did!
Mark and i made it down to bottom in 4-5 hours and were later joined 45 minutes or so by Fay and Will who pulled up from the road on the back of 2 mopeds! Together we waited for another hour until Nas also showed up on a moped. Apparently he thought we were meeting him back at his house. We had no idea where he lived and as it turned out was 20 minutes up the road in the opposite direction to where we started the walk! We later learnt hat the rest of the group had jumped on the back of the tea truck and driven down the rest of the way, Mark and i were the only 2 who completed the walk being the first to the bottom and the top!!
When we got back to katut's uncles house we were starving and ready for a hearty meal, you can picture our faces when Nas served us cake and apple for dinner!!.......
