Day 18 - Portage - Indiana Dunes - Chicago Day Trip
Bit of a sleep in this morning before heading off on a day trip to Indiana Dunes Lake Front and Chicago City.
Out on the Lake at Indiana Dunes Western Beach we waded out into the cold waters of Lake Michigan (just because we could) with the sky scrapers of Chicago peeking well above the horizon on the lake 30 odd miles to the west.
We took the more sedate, slower route into the city eventually driving along what they call Lake Front Blvd, passing through quite a few industrial areas with steel works and fuel refineries along the Eastern Shores of Chicago.
Stopped for lunch at a park sitting on the concrete stepped edge to the lake with fantastic views of Chicago City looming much bigger on the skyline.
Found our way into the city and a car park ($6.50/hour) on the side of the road near Grant Park. Then took ourselves on a walking tour to check out the start and end signs of Route 66 and the Willis Tower (formally Sears Tower) peaking above its neighbours.
A quick drive around the block to get photos of the car and us at the end (and beginning) of the trail was relatively easy as the traffic was light due to it being a Sunday.
Took a quicker way back to the motel on the interstate in time for an early tea and repackage of gear ready for the flight to Buffallo (Niagara Falls) tomorrow.
Bye Y'all
