Our few days in Hue were spend mostly being very lazy! (and playing pool in a bar near our hotel!) We hired a moped, for 5 USD for one day, and went to the local beach. I was going to try driving once we'd got out of the town, but the moped was so old and sketchy, jumping around, we decided it propably wasn't a good idea! The local beach (about 15km from Hue) was deserted, with people from beachside cafes (shacks) running towards us when we got there to make us stop on their chairs instead of someone elses. Beach good, had fun in waves, loads of crabs legging about! Only bad point- Will's sunglasses miracously disappeared after the locals who had sat next to us left- and they were his favourite. Also both got sunburnt- apparently our malaria tablets make your skin more sensitive to sun so got to be more careful!
We headed south to Danang- which on arrival we realised had nothing really to do! And the monsoon rains seemed to be catching up with us!
The following day we took the short bus ride (about 45min) to Hoi An- the town where tourists congregate to have clothes tailor made. And thats what we did! We spend most of our time going to different shops, having fittings, trying clothes and spending money! Our budget plan is suffering a bit! On the last day we did a cooking class with a local restaurant- run by an Australian charity providing aid and skills to disabled and disadvantaged children in Indochina. The class started with a market trip- I did consider being vege again after seeing pigs, chickens and ducks in tiny cages with legs tied, and meat and fish sat on tables in the morning heat. Was interesting to learn about different food, rice, rice paper, beans etc. The class itself was a bit disappointing however- rather than being in the kitchen we were sat at a table with the chef 'demonstrating' dishes, and then us having a go- mostly this involved putting things on the heat and stiring! The dishes we made were fairly simple though, and i think we could reproduce them at home- but we'll see!
Another night bus (as no train station in Hoi An) which was as awful as the first- less crazy driving but last on so sat in what felt like a cage at the bottom at the back! This took us to Nha Trang- Vietnam's main dive location.
On the first day we went to local spa and mud baths- this involved sitting in mud, being sprayed really hard by mineral water, then hot tub (about 50 C) as long as you could bear it, before going to swimming pool- we thought it would be a beaut to cool off- then realised pool was 38 C! Met three tiny kittens which we wanted to take home! Cats here are tiny and all look like kittens, so actual kittens were so cute!
Today we went scuba diving (Will's first time)- we found a shop run by a French guy, with Irish instructor. The two of them took us out. Most shops offered 1:1 where instructor holds onto you and shows you around. Our guys spend 15mins in the shallows teaching us skills so we could do it ourselves, and took us much deeper than other shops. They also said that if we decided to do course this could count as our first day- with two more after. Whereas most shops made you do three day course after first experience. It was brilliant- saw Nemo, swam over coral reef, held a sea cucumber and swam through jellyfish without getting stung! Hopefully we'll get some pics from instructor from underwater. So naturally we've decided to do the course- meaning we can dive just with a guide anywhere in the world (or on our own if we wanted to). Does mean we've had to recalculate budget and we'll have to be much more careful but reckon it'll be worth it!!
We'll let you know! Love to all xxx
