Jumping out of our swags around 4:45am, we wolfed down breakfast & headed to Uluru (Ayers Rock for you less educated folk) for sunrise. Unfortunately the spot we watched it from meant that the sun rose behind us, with us looking at Uluru. So although it looked good as the rock gradually became more red/orange, I would have preferred to have been the otherside to see it rise behind the rock Lion King style!! After the sun had fully risen, we headed off on our 10.5km walk around the base of Uluru. About 10 minutes into the walk we hit a massive flood plain across the track, so rather than get wet, we opted to walk around it. At one point we were almost touching the rock which is actually sacred ground & many believe that bad luck can be bought upon people who walk on the sacred ground or climb the rock. The wind had started to pick up, so I joked that the spirits were angry with us, much to the displeasure of Lou as this made her uneasy for the rest of the trip. Parts of the rock weren't not allowed to be photographed as again they are sacred parts & if people put these photos on the internet & the Aboriginals see them, then they can be punished by their tribes, which can be as severe as a spear through the leg.
We jumped back on the bus after our walk & headed to Kata Tjutu (another rock formation, that from a distance looks like Homer Simpson lying down) for more walking. This one however only took us an hour so it wasn't as bad as the temperature was starting to pick up. We then headed on back to Alice Springs to end our tour & prepare to head off to the East Coast.
