Athens was really fun! We were told you could see Athens in a day, and we sure did try our best! We got into the city at around 12:00 and struggled to find our hotel. They listed a train station that was a few kilometers from the hotel on their website. We were pretty beat from the heat and walking when we got to the hotel. We got some free drinks at the penthouse style bar on the top floor of our hotel, and you could literally see the Parthenon right there from the window. We got some energy and dropped our bags in the rooms and took off.
We immediately headed for the Acropolis, and hiked up to the top. It was an incredible view of the city that is MASSIVE! We took tons of photos and walked through all of the ruins. It is really hard to tell what is renovated and what isn't and they are right in the middle of a massive renovation in the main structure. It was really cool to think of how long ago that structure was built and walk on dirt and rocks that has been walked on for centuries upon centuries. Malikai has done quite a bit of mythology research and spent quite a bit of his GT class this year researching and discussing philosophy, so I'm sure he enjoyed it the most. Maybe. I can't even begin to calculate the miles we walked around Athens. All of us were tired, and super hungry. We walked up and down and all around looking at various historical structures within the city.
We found the locals deal on kabob style pittas for 2 euro, and sat down for a spell before heading back to the hotel for a well needed nap.
After resting for a bit, we hit the nightlife around town. There is an area called Athens Square where the flea market is during the day. There were tons of vendors and lots of locals lounging in the warm night air in Athens. It reminded me a little of Santa Monica, Greek style.
We all ate and people watched. We also negotiated for some light flyers the kids wanted. They started at 2 euros for one, and I taught Narci about negotiating. We got 3 for 2 euros.
It was a bit surreal in the square, total relaxed party atmosphere with the Acropolis sitting above us lit up in it's full glory.
