Today we woke up with half a day free before our flight left Athens at 4:00. We decided to hit the beach just outside Athens in a suburb called Kalamaakio.
The Meditteranean is deep blue and turquoise clear water. At recommendations from several sources, we paid to go to a beach club for the showers and towels, as well as access to this kid's slide playground at the edge of the water. Well, it was a bit of a waste of money, no showers except outdoor ones, no towels, and the kids slide area wasn't open.
We shook it off and had fun in the sun and sand. I could really live at the beach, I am convinced. Narci and I played soccer and volleyball with a beach ball, and Malikai and Adam threw the baseball around for a bit. Jeff went off and bought lunch and beach towels, while Kylie body surfed the small waves. It was nice to get a chance to unwind after all of the walking from yesterday.
Most of the Greeks at the beach were playing a game that was a mix between ping pong and squash or tennis. There was no net or court, you just merely pass the ball with paddles back and forth between a partner or two. We got a set on the way back to the tram. It will be fun to see if it is as easy as the locals made it look. We headed straight to the airport after the beach, making it back and into the airport just in time for our flight. Athens was fantastic. However, I think if we go again, or make suggestions to a friend going, we would stay at the beach and go into the city to see the sights. Onward to Rome!
