As Jackie and Rose we the only ones left in Athens we had a leisurely morning around the hotel and then hired a car for our Thelma and Louise road trip to the Corinth Canal, quick lesson in how to drive around Athens:
Place hire car anywhere within the 4 lanes of tarmac (ignore the white lane markings).
- Press accelerator.
- Point the car in the general direction you want to go, but if you see something of interest on the left hand side, just pull over to a stop - and same for the right hand side.
- No indication necessary just be aware of bikers who have a law to themselves and can cut you up at anytime.
- If in doubt, just turn the radio up and sing along with the music.
Arrived at the Corinth Canal, stood on the viewing platform and took in its' splendour. Asked a local shop owner which was the best end of the canal to watch the sunset, the reply was both ends are the same??. Surely this couldn't be right but what she meant was both ends of the canal looked the same as in a ship yard. After driving round for quite a while to get onto the blue bridge (which actually isn't possible anymore) and losing interest rapidly, we decided to visit the nearby town of Loutraka, which had a beach.
The sea looked very inviting, except to Jackie as she said it was full of fish. We managed to find a little cove under a palm tree and decided to go for a little paddle, holy chuff the beach was full of pebbles and hurt our feet. The water was refreshing (or as Jackie said it was freezing).
Got out of the water and started laughing once we realised that the towel we had brought with us to dry our feet was still in the car (which was parked 500 metres away), oops. We don't stick fast so wiped our feet on tissue that Jackie had in her handbag - sorted!
Called into a beach side restaurant and ordered pizza and chips for tea. Sounds easy, not for us. The chips were served within 5 minutes but the pizza on the other hand followed 40 minutes later. The coffee that we ordered was that repulsive that Jackie couldn't drink it - which has never been heard of before.
Steady (well steady for Athens) drive back to the Hotel, keeping the car to return to the airport in the morning for our departure home. One last stroll up to the Acropolis and then back to the room to pack.
