Breakfast as usual on the balcony, everyone looking forward to the day's events.
Jackie, Lola and Rose consulted with the Hotel reception staff as to recommendations for a traditional Greek entertainment evening. This was all booked and sorted, no hassle.
Training again today, so off the group went back to the Dojo. Once training had finished and as is customary a few gifts were presented to the host Sensei from the visiting Sensei. Shane presented Babis with gifts that had been thoughtfully designed especially for the occassion. Now was the turn of the host Sensei presenting gifts to the visiting Sensei - Babis handed two gift bags to Shane, one with a bottle of traditional Greek spirit in (Ouzo) and the other with 4 jars of fruit soaked in a sugar suspension with bits in - Yep 3 jars of jam and 1 jar of marmalade... Really ???
Once back at the hotel, Shane, Tony and Paul, along with a small group of students went to meet a fellow Sensei Panos Agrios at Bar 14 (Also known as Tony's Bar )for a courtesy meeting.
A question was asked on the way to the bar " I wonder how many people will be coming down, to which Tony replied "It doesn't matter cos we are gonna win".
The lads asked Panos to show them his dojo which was local to our hotel, so off they trot apart from Graham Terry who was still in the toilet when everyone left. Graham blamed Shaun for not waiting for him, and as he had no idea where it was he named it the "hidden dojo".
Whilst visiting the dojo Panos asked Shane if he would like to teach on the Tuesday evening, once Shane mentioned it to the group, everyone was in favour of it. It only took Panos 24 hours to arrange 15 students, which just goes to show true enthusiam, this was very different from Babis's 8/10 months to sort and only being able to arrange for 4 students to attend.
After meeting Panos and on the way back to the hotel, another question was asked "What are we gonna do to not scare them ?", the answer "Just do the warm up and leave".
The group were asked to be back at the hotel by 8.30 as a representative from the Restaurant was meeting us to guide us. The full entourage set off following the Guide to the restaurant. Sadly we were not informed that the table only held 18 and our party was now 22. It was touch and go neither we were staying as our party would be split onto 2 tables, but the Senior Sensei's were quite happy to have a table of their own.
Everyone had dressed appropriately for the evening and looked wonderfully turned out. Frank had been to C&A especially to buy a new checkered shirt. He wanted to put into our kitty for the evening meal but was told to keep his money in his pocket and buy himself a new shirt. Frank asked what was wrong with his shirt, Rose ran her hand down the sleeve and jokingly said nothing is wrong with your shirt but then wiped her hand on some tissue to get rid of the ticky tacky feeling.
The meal was a set menu, phew no racking of brains as to what to order. The food was in ample supply and delicious, as was the beer. The entertainment consisted of traditional Greek dancing, fire dancing, belly dancing (to great delight to most of the male students) but then came the audience participation.
Jackie and Rose have fallen foul of this on the previous trip to Singapore and knew exactly what to do - bury your head in the food and ignore eye contact with the dancers, hmmm those donuts were lovely!!. Andy and Ian nearly fell off their chairs in fits of laughter watching Jackie, Rose and Gary evade the situation. Ian noticing that Andy was quite nervous about being dragged up onto the stage, decided to tap him on the shoulder resulting in the colour draining out of Andy's face, it was so funny to watch Andy looking so scared. Shaun did a lovely Zorba rendition, which was similar to Irimi nage lol. Then Diane, Paul Leadley, Shaun and Graham joined in with the belly dancing routine, some a bit more energetically rhythmic than others, ok they turned it into the Yorkshire version of the birdy dance, laughs all round.
A steady walk through the meze of small streets and alleyways back to the hotel after a very enjoyable evening. Who needs a Greek habitat to organise a brilliant evening when 3 Yorkshire lasses can do just as well if not better.
