We filled up on diesel back in Kalumburu a bit dubious about how it would go even though it fell at the prestigious end of $2.60/L - the most we’ve paid so far. I stocked up on fresh fruit and veg to last us until Kununurra at the end of the Gibb and we tuned into some Harry Potter as we bumped along back to Drysdale Station very pleased to turn into the gate after 4 hours of bone rattling corregations broken only by stretches of 40km/h rocky track. It was very tempting over our burgers and Bundaberg ginger beers (renamed Butterbeer by our JK fans) to call it a day, but that meant a similar day of driving tomorrow. So our intrepid driver made the call to drive the further 2 hours or so to Ellenbrae Station where we arrived to select a campsite from a very crowded campground just as it was growing dark. Thankfully an elderly German couple took pity on us and moved their car so we could squeeze in next to their fire. They had arrived in true Gromad style at 10:30am and became increasingly regretful of their decision not to push through to Home Valley as they watched the campsite fill beyond capacity. It was a shame as the facilities including HOT SHOWERS were pretty good for a bush camp. Said showers were heated by a woodfire boiler and relished by each member of the Whalan clan. It has been a while! Looking forward to sampling the famous Ellenbrae scones for brekky.
