Kalbarri - Denham (Shark Bay), 385 km
Accommodation: Denham Seaside Caravan Park, $106 2 nights, powered, ensuite site, 2 people
Out of Kalbarri early, 385 km of not much in the way of scenery and some very long straight stretches of road.
Breakfast at The Billabong Roadhouse - feed was good. Diesel was cheaper here than the Shell Roadhouse next door.
Next stop Hamelin Pool to check out the stromatolites. One of two places in the world where living marine stromatolites occur. Viewing boardwalk made it easy to see and our stop coincided with low tide.
Next on the see and do list was Shell Beach. We did thoroughly coat ourselves in Bushman's after our fly experience at Hamelin Pool. The entire beach is predominantly little cockle shells - something like 4,000 cockles per square metre. In some sections, the cockles are about 10 metres deep.
Eagle Bluff provided some excellent views across Denham Sound. We didn't see any marine wildlife on this stop, but the water was definitely clear enough to see if there was. The dirt road into here is corrugated. The shake rattle and roll of the dirt driving seams to have unblocked the gas cook top and hot plates.
The foreshore area at Denham has been really well done and extends to include a restored pearl lugger moored not too far out in the bay.
