Your heroes made it to Namibia. Usual 2 hour flight and then 1 and 1/2 queue for immigration but 19 hours after leaping into the air at Heathrow we made it into the outside world in Africa. Boy it was hot.
The flight and journey was all relatively uneventful with only one moment when I thought MR Barker had been swapped for a ringer. Sat in Johannesburg airport waiting for our connection with the flight time rapidly approaching MR Barker decided to order a second coffee and got a bit huffy when I kept saying we need to hustle on down to the gate, Mr B moaning we'll just be waiting at the gate for ages while we wait for boarding to really start. Turned out not only looking at iPad on UK time but thought flight time was 12:30 rather than 12. Always good to be last on the plane.
Picked up by Martin and whisked off to the Namvic yard to collect our chariot for the next week. Slight hitch when we got there as only one tent fitted and as much as we enjoy being together sharing one small tent with Mr B might be a step to far. A certain amount of faffing around as time was ticking by, we where aware that driving in the dark through the park was not permited, we had a 2 & 1/2 hour drive, it was sundown at 7 and it was 5 already. Eventually tent is loaded and off we drive.
Into Windhoek and a quick stop for diesel and biscuits, much locking of doors and lookin around very furtivly but all OK.
Hit the road looking at the sun going down getting nervous, all tarmac throuh Okahandja and Ombotozo. Finally we get to the D2414 and onto the dirt roads and into 4WD with the light rapidly failing.
By the time we get to the reserve gate its fully dark and we are down to driving at 20KMPH. After much radioing they let us through (not sure what the alternaive would be), very slowly drove along the last 30K with foxes runnin about, wilderbeast crossing and even an owl hunting. At last we arrive and are shown to our indivdual lodges with prvate balconies over looking the water hole with hippos playing in the water and African wild dogs avoiding the crocodials. just time for a quick glass of sherry before going to dinner with the locals providing a little singsong.
An eventfull day but got to be up early for the dawn safari so off to bed at 10:30 (would turn out to be the latest night we had all week).
