From Atherton we headed straight to Mareeba the coffee capital of Australia. We did a tour of a coffee and chocolate place where we had the chance to sample 30 odd different coffee's and a few different chocolates. We then drove to the Palmer river roadhouse and pub for probably the best steak sandwich i have had. As soon as we arrived at Cooktown and setup the camper we started working on who was taking us fishing :-). As it turned out the first one we rang had 2 spots avail the next morning (sunday). it was a windy morning and as we arrived at the boat ramp and couldnt see a boat so Pop joked that a small tinnie on the bank was ours. as it turned out our boat wasnt much bigger than what we had joked about. We climbed aboard and headed towards the river with the captain/decky pointing out some fruitbats on the way. our first stop pop and another guy on the charter both caught fish (a black brim and a mangrove jack) at the second spot i finally caught a brim with pop leading the tally on 3 brim, then my rod went off and we saw my fish (queen fish) jump out of the water and swim around like a madman, when i finally got it to the side of the boat we got into the net only for it to fall out a hole in the side of the net, after some tricky manouvering we got it back through the hole and in the boat for a photo and released again. Pop caught another brim and a frog fish before we headed to the captains mud crab pots for a look. we grabbed 2 crabs and saw a couple of croc's on the banks on the way back. pop lead the tally with the most fish but i got the biggest. With the fish, crabs and crocs this was probably our best fishing trip ever. Yesterday we went for a drive down the Bloomfield track to Cape Tribulation, its a track ive heard about but wasnt that impressed with, it basically a gravel rd with a few steep bits. it was worth the drive however as it took us through the Daintree Nat park and we stopped at Wadji wadji falls for a look plus the Lions den hotel produced some great mudcake. The caravan park where we are has some great wildlife after dark for the kids, we have had bandicootes running around our feet, cerluw's making grumpy sounds at us and a tawney frog mouth calls past each night as well. the weather is still magic with 27-30 degree days but its been windy every day we have been here, they tell us that isnt a bad thing cos it keeps the mozzies away. tomorrow we head for the Cape so next blog i should be bragging how we conqured the tele track........................hopefully.
