Its been a busy few days, very tiring, plenty of driving - within the limits, mind!
We left Queenstown and had just a day in Wanaka (beautiful lake) but then moved on to the Glacier towns of Fox and Franz Josef. There are Glaciers in both towns, in fact the Mount Cook national park of which these fall, 40% are Glaciers. We firstly walked with a guide to the terminal face of Fox which is 7 miles of ice which has formed over thousands of years. The rock falls that have been happening over the past few years make the place very dangerous, but a fantastic thing to do.
Then as it was quite late we drove to our hotel 'Oasis' in Franz Josef town and a beautiful oasis it was. All white fluffy bedding, towels, very boutique and just what was wanted after a busy day.
Next morning another early start as a long drive up the west coast wasin front of us. But Mr. F. wanted to 'do' Franz Josef Glacier , an easier one to walk without the need for a guide. So after a lovely Al Fresco breakfast in the warm sunshine, we walk for a couple of hours and enjoy our second Ice Road, within two days. No matter how many of the Kiwis call it Glaaacier, theyll always be FOX'S GLACIER MINTS TO US!
So on the road we finally get. A long trek ahead, some fabulous stops at 'lookout' points to view the snow capped Mount Cook, New Zealands highest at 12,316 feet, but eventually we arrive at Punakaiki, our bungalow actually on the beach! I must admit I've been looking forward to this stop since I booked it months ago ! Weve travelled the longest journey yet, but wow its worth it. We've bought supplies on the way so a bottle of bubbles, a supper of Prawns, Monkfish and Salad, finished off with Strawberries and Choccies and a walk on our very own piece of beach for the evening sunset, perfection.
