Our last few nights in Rome went quickly and were full. We stayed in a funky little neighbourhood near Termini train station and ate at a great little taverna where the Grandma was hand rolling the pasta in the kitchen and Grandpa was running the plates out to happy diners. We loved the fresh food that inspires us to cook simply and with fresh ingredients.
On our anniversary we had booked a day trip beginning at the Vatican museums with early entry at 8am. We wandered through the incredible collections and found ourselves enamoured with the Sistene chapel. Later our walk through the Vatican gardens gave us an incredible view of St. Peter's Basilica from the other side. We hopped the private train from inside the Vatican and it took us an hour away to Castello Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope since the 1500's. Papa Francis feels it is not necessary for him to stay there as it is so luxurious. We toured the palace where popes up until now have resided on holiday and can rest from the demands of being the pope! We also toured the gardens which were typical Italian rose gardens with stunning cypress lined driveways and manicured hedges in all shapes. Ancient Roman columns littered the space, remnants of old days. We were especially lucky to see a herd of nuns walking by, all waving with big smiles. I love the nuns!!
We returned on the train and reached the Vatican City just as sunlight was streaming thru, a great way to end the day.
We sauntered back into Piazza Navona in time for happy hour and enjoyed a lively crowd. In a church just around the corner was a special exhibit of the artist Jean-Michael Basquait, a New York graffiti artist who died too young of a heroin overdose and who sold a painting over 100 million last week. Chris was ecstatic to see the show and So when in Rome, do as the Romans do!
Rome has such an appeal for so many reasons. Old roman ruins surrounded by cobbled streets and alleys. Neat little neighbourhoods that have their own vibe. And so many great al fresco eating options, with live music and sunshine to add to the flavour.
We loved our time in Rome and look forward to returning one day.
