Our last days in India was very mix feeling; we were eager to leave India and to go to Thailand and chill at the beach, but also, we were kind of sad to leave because we were so used to India and its way of life. Also there were still many places we wanted to go, like Varanasi or Hampi… But we had our flight booked so we didn't have really a choice.
After almost 12 hours of flight connections, we finally arrived to Phuket airport. Our first flight was from Kochi to Mumbai, which went really well. The plane was an enormous Boeing with TV for every seat… The next flight from Mumbai to Bangkok was late almost one hour, so we were stressed to miss our next flight. The stewardess said that no way will we have our flight; also we had to get our visa for Thailand in the immigration. So when the plane finally landed in Bangkok, we run to catch the next flight. But what we didn't know was that Bangkok Airport is huge and we arrived on the other side. So we run everywhere, and we finally found someone who could give us our boarding passes. But when she had finished, she said that it wasn't here we should go; it's the next immigration place. So again we run and finally found our gate and got our flight!
Now we know that 2 hour stop isn't enough for changing flights!
In Phuket airport we waited David's mum and dad, who arrived also from Bangkok. They gave us the best Christmas present ever; 3 nights in Meridian Phuket resort! It's a 5 star hotel resort with everything you could wish for. When got to our room, I couldn't believe my eyes; the room was so big, with big flat TV, a huge soft bed, bathroom with bathtub and I don't know how many towels. It really changed from the hotels we've been in India!
In the resort there were also 2 big swimming pools, I don't know how many restaurants, golf course, rock climbing, mini golf, tennis…And a private beach. The best I have ever been with white sand and turquoise sea. A paradise!
We spent 4 days at the Meridien and ate so well that I at least gained another 3 kilos. The buffet breakfast with all you can imagine…After India it was so nice to have the choice to eat everything you like and not toasts with chili or rice…
One night we went to the nearest town, it's called Patong beach. And what a shock it was for us! It was like a Disneyland of bars and w****s, full of English and Scandinavian tourists drunk as ever. Really the worst place ever you could spend your holiday. So don't go there. Never.
After 4 days we left to Krabi to meet my friend Katri and her boyfriend Jere. They had come to Thailand for 2 weeks so we would spend 3 days with them in Railey Beach. They had booked their hotel in the Railey East, which was more expensive so we went to Railey West. It wasn't far, 10 minutes walk. It was ok place, the beach was nice and the sea crystal clear. One day we wanted to go to a lagoon, which wasn't supposed to be difficult to access. The only way to the lagoon was to climb a hill through the jungle. They had put some ropes to help the climbing. We saw one snake also! But it was so small and just passing through so we continued anyway. But what we didn't know was that the road just got worse and worse, we climbed and then slide down.It was really hard! Finally we got to the top of the hill, where there was a beautiful view over Railey. Then we continued to the lagoon, but what stopped us was the last maybe 20 meters that went straight down. We thought it would be too dangerous; we were in swimming suites, with our bags and flip flops. Not exactly the best equipments for rock climbing. So we decided to go back, without seeing the lagoon. But it was weird that nowhere they put info that you have to climb and it wouldn't be a easy climb.
After 4 days we left Railey to Ko Lanta. Katri and Jere stayed in Railey and after they went to Ko Phi Phi. It was so nice to see them!! Kiitos Katri!
We went to Ko Lanta by bus or minibus. The first thing we have noticed in Thailand was that the buses are so good comparing to Indian buses. They are more expensive of course but they're really comfortable.
In Ko Lanta we stayed in the Long Beach, and we found a bungalow at the beach. It looked first ok, but we found out that the bathroom was horrible: there was water leaking from the tap, and the water stayed on the floor because there wasn't any sewer on that side. There were all kinds of bugs and animals visiting us; every night two frogs came from a hole which was for the sewer, and every night I trapped them and throw them out but they always came back. There were also worms and thousand legs everywhere, it was horrible! And there were geckos but I left them alone because they eat other insects. Oh and also there was cockroach. SO really a dream hut to stay!
But the beach was so nice. There was ocean tide so in the evening and at morning the sea level was ebbing and in the afternoon it rose. When the tide was ebbing, there were all the seashells and little parts of coral that I could collect.
Near our hut was a bar/ restaurant called the Independence bar, which was kept by a French couple. We spent many nights there.
We also rent a scooter and visited the island. It was very easy to move with a scooter. We went to the port, where we found a restaurant with some Swedish food, so I could eat some meat balls and mashed potatoes! But not as good as my mummo's meat balls, but still it was nice to have some Scandinavian food.
In Ko Lanta many hotels and bars and restaurants are owned by foreign people. We were pretty surprised by that. Some came only for 6 months and then left, others stayed longer. But it's not easy to stay there over the summer because of the monsoon.
We wanted to go to an island near Ko Lanta but it was so expensive, that we decided to go straight to Bangkok. We booked a train from Trang. The journey took 15 hours, it was a night train. The trains in Thailand are so much better than in India, but as always it's because it's also more expensive.
