Day 31 22/08/11
A noisy night despite Lake Hart being a nice spot ………….. Wasn’t really the Road Trains this time, it was the Freight trains that kept waking Toby & myself up. About 7 passed during the night…… busy railway line! We were on the road by 9am after having a couple of nice chats with fellow campers, some heading north some south. One couple with 3 kids had been on the road for 10 months – home schooling the kids – heading home for 2 weeks near Adelaide then off to Western Australia until Christmas ……………. Good Life!! Our first stop this morning was Woomera, famous for testing of long range missiles and rockets during the Cold War, and the launch and tracking of spacecraft in the early days of the Space Age. We checked out the Missile Park, some Space Satellites had been recovered from the Simpson Desert in the nineties but were launched during the sixties - one was dug out of 1.5m deep of sand. Back on the road we headed for Port Augusta, made a couple of calls and booked ahead some accommodation for tonight and Tues/Wed in Adelaide. Made Port Augusta Big 4 Caravan Park around 12.30, set up camp and made some lunch. Headed into town, went to check out the Outback Centre which is situated at the Tourist Information Centre but at $17 per Adult & $8.95 for Billy decided maybe another time, brochure indicates that this place is great to visit before seeing the Outback!! Made a couple of quick stops at the shops for a few supplies then back to Caravan Park for a easy afternoon. Had a try at flying the Kite but the wind had died down maybe later??! Toby managed to hook up the T-Box & TV Antenna so Billy was able to enjoy a little ABC2 for the afternoon…………… he was glued ! Early night after cooking dinner up at the Camp Kitchen ………….. impressive Kitchen – 2 Ovens, 2 Microwaves, 2 Fridge/ Freezers, Sinks & even Pots/Pans/ Utensils etc!
