Sunday was another travel day, mostly through large expanses of desert. It was very dull. Around noon we entered Utah and drove through Flaming Gorge National Recreation area. This was gorgeous! Beautiful rock formations, deep gorges and a beautiful lake. We ate lunch by a small inlet of the lake, very quiet and peaceful with an eagle soaring overhead. Sorry, we only got the one picture. You will just have to take my word for it that it was great.
I will start a new photo album for Utah so look for it.
We stayed in the town of Vernal, much bigger than we expected. The most notable feature is huge beautiful plantings of petunias everywhere. It is very striking! I hope the picture does it justice.
We spent the day at Dinosaur National Monument Park. Once again gorgeous topography. We took a wonderful hike up through the rock formations but had to turn back when the weather started to get bad.
Dale had to stop by the river which is supposed to have 20,000 trout per mile. The poor man was salivating.
After lunch we went to the actual dinosaur quarry. A small peeve, the parking area was closed and RVs had to park down a steep narrow curvy two lane road and walk up to the exhibit. We opted for the 1.5 mile hike from the visitors centers over parking and doing the dangerous road walk.
The dinosaur wall was very impressive. They chose to leave many many bones in place so visitors could view them. You can actually walk up to the wall and touch the fossilized bones. I still don't see how anyone actually sees these bones when the are fully embedded in rock but that's why they have PhDs in paleontology.
On the way back to town we stopped at the local natural history museum. It was mainly devoted to dinosaurs and fossils but the exhibits were well done and it was interesting.
