Day 57 Rochester to Stowe
We woke to a misty morning. Breakfast was part of our stay but unfortunately only one of the cooks arrived. Instead of breakfast starting at 8.30am, we did not sit down to eat until 9.00am. At least by the time we had finished eating the mist had lifted and technically we only had an hour and half drive to get to Stowe. So it ended up being a lazy start to the day.
Driving on the minor roads, we were able to continually stop to take photos of the beautiful autumn colours. We also stopped to photograph and then drive across/through a couple of covered bridges. We arrived in the town of Waterbury which is the home of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Unfortunately, they do not give away free samples so we joined the queue to purchase our ice cream.
A little further up the road was Cabot's Creamery. This is a cheese outlet. We tried some really lovely cheddars and purchased their Artisan Reserve Cheddar. It was a 3yr matured cheddar that had a great sharp taste. We also spoke with a lovely lady who worked there. She gave us lots of advice on places to go and see some great foliage displays.
We then drove to Montpelier which is the capital of Vermont. They are proud of the fact that they are the smallest capital city in the USA. It has a residential population of around 8000 but with the people who drive into the city to work the daytime population is 21000.
Heading back through Waterbury, as we discovered that was where the largest grocery store could be found, we bought some groceries to cover us for the next 3 days. We arrived in Stowe around 5.00pm. The house we are staying in was a granny flat attached to main house set on acreage. It is absolutely huge. The master bedroom is larger than our main bedroom. The bathroom would be twice the size as a normal bathroom. We were advised that the owner converted an old barn into the large granny flat. We unpacked, put the groceries in the fridge and headed out for a bit of drive to familiarise ourselves with the area.
