Day 56 Amherst to Rochester
Carolyn made us a lovely breakfast to get us on our way. Audley mentioned a few more places for us to see on our way to Rochester. The day started out rather overcast but it improved as we headed north.
Heading off we went to the look out on the outskirts of Amhurst that Audley mentioned. Being an overcast day the views were not as good as it might have been on a sunny day. The next recommendation was Yankee Candle Village. This place is huge. We spent at least an hour roaming around looking at all they have on offer. There are a couple of very large showrooms with a large variety of candles. They also have a bakery, candy shop, kitchen wares and Christmas shop.
From there we continued on the back roads watching the colours develop in the trees as we drove through up route 2 to North Adams and then across to route 100, driving through Wilmington, Wardsboro, Londonderry, Killington and finally arriving at our night stop in Rochester. Even on route 2 and route 100 (being minor highways) we were not always able to stop to take the photos as there was no breakdown lane or area to pull off the road.
The place where we were spending the night was about 10 minutes out of town on acreage. The house has 8 bedrooms named after a well know writer. We were in the Robert Frost room. A breakfast is also provided to anyone staying there. The owner encourages writers to stay at his place to write their novels and he runs writers' workshops over long weekends. Even with two writers staying the night, the vibes did not help us with the literary prose in our blogs.
We had a nice dinner at the School Street bistro that night. It was quite popular as it was the only place to get a meal that night. After the meal we headed back to the house but we did not see any wildlife on the road.
