Day 58 Stowe
We woke to a very misty morning. As we would not get to see much we took the opportunity to have a bit of sleep in.
After a late breakfast we set out to drive through a mountain pass known as Smugglers Notch. At the bottom of the mountain is a large ski resort and gondola to take people up the mountain. In amongst the treed mountain you can see the open area which in a few months will become the ski runs. The scattered clouds were casting dark patches on the colourful landscape.
As we continued on our way up the mountain the road became narrower as the road meandered around large granite boulders. The road is quite steep from the Stowe side. The canopy of colour changed from green/yellow to include shades of red. Cars were parked in small notches off the road as we drove up the mountain. There are various trail heads leaving these areas, leading to great outlooks or ponds.
Over the mountain we reached the small town of Jeffersonville. Here we discovered a couple of silos which have been beautifully painted. We continued on to Morrisville and found Bliss Hill Road which we had been told had the trees forming a canopy across the road. This was not a disappointing drive. This road is out of the way to most traffic and is surrounded by pasture land with cows grazing. We had the opportunity to walk the road, taking pictures. It would have been a different story had it been better known. We only knew about it from the lady at Cabot's Creamery.
We headed home to get a quick bite to eat and then headed out for a walk around the local area. The is a track that leads to trail heads approx. 500m from where we are staying. Unfortunately, most of the walk we took was under dense canopy so we took the opportunity to walk down the road when the track turned towards the road. It turned out to be the road where we were staying. However, we did come past some horse stables where they were teaching young girls to ride as well as see more fall colours in the trees near the road. (One of the horses in the barn was not happy. We were expecting to see a hole kicked through the wall at any moment)
By the time we got back to our house, it was dark and time to cook dinner.
