An early start today as we travelled to Nong Son ADP area. This ADP has total of 7 communes (which are kind of similar to our suburbs) and is located in a valley in the mountains. It was a very rough road to get here particularly up one side of the mountain and then down the other side. This ADP floods between 5-10 times per year in the rainy season (Oct-Dec). It is farming land down here with rice and corn, and farmers will try to harvest their crop before the rains come, but sometimes they aren't so lucky and they lose their whole crop. It is just beautiful country side, very green and lush.
I met with the Vice Manager of the Education Department for 20 minutes this morning, before meeting with a couple of teachers. Then we had a bit of a break so I typed up some more interview notes.
Many people have told me about getting clothes made in Vietnam. Well today I was so thrilled to meet two young people who had received vocational training in tailoring from WV disability project. The young man, Le, was in the middle of his course with three months to go and was loving it. The young woman, Loi, finished her course late last year and one month ago started up her own tailor shop with the help of WV. She has a steady flow of business and is making a profit. And above all of this, she is already teaching someone else in her disability club how to tailor, which means that more lives will be changed. It was awesome to see how a few months of training and a little support can go so far.
After this we started the journey home, but needed to pick Thurza up on the way. All of a sudden, the weather changed quite dramatically, the sky went black, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped at least a few degrees. While waiting for Thurza we all jumped out to get photos (the lighting was awesome!!!) and about 2 mins after we all got back in the car and took off, the rain came and didn't stop for about an hour. It certainly was nice and refreshing from the 40 degree day with blaring sun that we had earlier.
Tomorrow is our last day doing interviews and collecting data in the ADP. I am meeting with some parents of CWD and then we all meet with the ADP staff in the afternoon. It has been so humbling being welcomed by these wonderful people who are really trying to make something of themselves, and you can see that the WV project is making a difference for them.
On Thursday and Friday we will spend time in Danang analysing the results, before taking off to Hoi An for some R&R before catching the flight home on Saturday afternoon. It's the home stretch now!
