I didn't sleep near as well as I did compared to the previous night. It seemed to get much colder in the middle of the night and I had to get up and get more blankets, so in the end I had 8 blankets on!!! We all woke around 7am again and it was close to freezing. Nong had put the bonfire on so we all got up and sat around the fire to warm up. I was looking forward to getting a warm shower and a proper bed tonight :) Breakfast was scrambled eggs and toast this morning, but again I just stuck to the toast. I was super delighted last nights dinner hadn't seemed to effect me in a bad way :)
We had a four hour journey down the Maetang River on bamboo rafts to get back to civilisation. We had two rafts so three of us had to go with Nong and four went with a local guide. The British stuck together which meant I was with Brian and Val in Nong's raft, and I was super delighted with this as I don't think I could have listened to the Auzzie couple for 4 hours talk non stop and not have said anything. The rafts were made last night by local people in the village, and our bags were all tied to a triangle at the front of the raft. We had to stand the whole journey, and listen to Nong's instructions as Brian and I were at the back with a bamboo pole each and had to steer the raft. It was really long so it needed Nong to steer the front and us to steer the back. It was the dry season in Thailand which meant the river was really shallow in parts, which then meant we had to work really hard in the rapids so we didn't hit any big rocks. The rapids were brilliant but also so rough that when you were steering you felt like you were going to loose your balance and fall in. Luckily I managed to stay on my feet the whole time. Two hours down the river we stopped at a village for a break, by this time the sun was getting up and it was getting much warmer. When I tried to get off the raft onto and I stepped into sinking mud and my flip flop broke, which was really annoying because they were my havaianas that I had worn everyday since Africa.
The sun was really hot, so for the next two hours I took my straps down and clarted on the sun cream so I could top up my tan :) and by the time we stopped for lunch I was brown as a berry according to the girls. The scenery coming down the river was absolutely spectacular, it was picturesque at every turn and so peaceful. We thought that four hours standing on a bamboo raft was going to take forever but it was surprising how quickly the morning past. We got off the rafts at around 12.30pm for lunch and then got our truck back to the city. We had proper Pad Thai for lunch which was really nice but again I just had a small amount.
Our truck journey was going to take two hours to get back to Chiang Mai but it was such a horrible dusty journey in the back of the open sided truck. We stopped half way to go and see the Long Neck tribe, which was the tribe that the ladies put a gold ring around their neck every year after theyre 5 years old until they're 25. It was really interesting and some of their necks were so long. I also managed to get some goodies for Carole's henny at this village which I was chuffed about.
We got back to the hotel at 4pm, and as soon as I stepped of the truck I could have slept! I was exhausted. The group swapped email addresses so we could exchange photos and then I went and found Lauren. It was so good to see her and have company again. Adz also phoned on viber for a chat as he had finished work early for the week and was heading up the road from Dundee. I showered and got ready to go out, as Lauren and I were determind to get a massage tonight. We headed into the main city at about 5.30pm as I hadn't been in the walls of the city centre yet, due to being unwell at the start of the week. We had loads to catch up on so we chatted the whole time, and since we were both still on antibiotics we weren't going out for drinks. We went to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner, which had white table clothes and complimentary nibbles. It was lovely to be back in civilisation and tonight was the first time I actually felt hungry in a week. It was exactly a week since we had got the food poisoning so it had been a long 7 days. I had lasagne and garlic bread for dinner, and Lauren had a grilled chicken dish both of which were really nice.
We then went for a walk and found this massage parlour which looked quite fancy. Instead of just going for the £4, hour long oil massage, we both decided to go all out and spend £10 for a 2 hour long Thai treatment package. It included a Thai massage, followed by an hours full body oil massage and then finished off with Thai hot stones. It was totally bliss, just what I was in need of. To start off with it was really sore because all my leg muscles being so tight after the trek but by the end I could have fallen asleep. On our way back to the hotel we passed another massage place that did 30 minute foot massages for £1... and how could you resist. It was a lovely chilled out Friday evening getting pampered in Chiang Mai.
Even though I was absolutely shattered, I couldn't sleep at all. I had a million things going round my head from emails I had received about stuff I needed to do when I was home and home was the last thing I wanted to think about. In the end I put on Bridget Jones on my ipad and it was about 2am before I eventually managed to sleep.
It's crazy knowing that I am flying to Bangkok tomorrow for my last leg of my trip :( I don't want to go home!!! xxx
