Well this morning I was flying from Invercargill up to Christchurch with Air Zealand. Robyn was insistent that she would come to the airport with us to say goodbye so she picked Margaret and I up at 9am to head out to the airport.
It was a 30minute check in, which was brilliant so by the time I dropped my bag and took some photos, we were boarding the flight. It was just like the small planes that go up to Shetland. Both Robyn and Margaret were crying when we said our goodbyes, I really have had a lovely week with them in Invercargill and have been spoilt rotten :)
The flight was only 55 minutes and it was more like a scenic flight because we were flying so low. I could see all the lakes and mountains the whole way up. I managed to get the public bus that dropped me right outside the Uni halls where I was staying again, which meant it was much cheaper than the airport shuttle. The weather in Christchurch was gorgeous, really hot and not a cloud in the sky, so I checked in, dropped my bag in the room, changed into shorts then headed straight to the city centre.
Well did I get a shock or did I get a shock....! I couldn't believe what I saw, I tried to get my bearings from my last visit but everything was cordoned off. The Cathedral Square where I stayed 4 years ago was totally out of bounds, with massive security fences all around and you couldn't even get close to the cathedral. Where there used to be restaurants and pubs on my last visit was now the containers which they were using as shops. I loved Christchurch on my last world tour, infact it was my favourite city from that trip, so it was actually heartbreaking to see what has happened in the last year.
The weather was great though, so I had a wonder around the container shops and then sat in the sun watching the worlds buskers festival. Then some guy came up to me and gave me the biggest fright, he sat next to me giving me loads of compliments and I was terrified, he asked me out but I walked away. He looked totally normal but I think he must have been really drunk. He certainly gave me a scare so I went back to the bus stop and headed for the hostel.
I had been in touch with Ewan Wyness so he was free to meet me for tea which worked out great. I had a shower and got ready when I got back to my room, and by that time it was 6pm and Ewan picked me up. His girlfriend Pat, that I met last time was at home in Thailand so that was a shame I missed her, but we went to Lone Star for a bar supper which was perfect.
It wasn't a late night because I had to get up at 3.30 in the morning, so Ewan just dropped me off after our meal about 8ish. I watched Love Actually on my iPad and packed my backpack before managing to sleep. I am loving this single room hostels :) Eak maybe I'm becoming. 'flashpacker'!!!
Time is passing far too quickly, and can't believe thats my New Zealand visit over :( but certainly a worth while visit. Well.... until next time New Zealand :) xxx
