I can't believe it's December already, time is passing far too quickly!!
Last night I needed the toilet in the middle of the night, and yup you guessed it.. It's unsafe to go out of the tent yourself so we were told to wake your tent buddy and make them watch guard with torches while you went to the toilet or 'bush'. The joys of camping in the wild with The Big 5 surrounding you.
Anyways we got a sleep in today until 6am, then we packed everything and headed back to civilisation! I could easily have stayed another couple of nights, it was a fantastic experience. Our last mokoro ride was the same as always - heaven and completely relaxing. I stayed awake this time and took in the beautiful scenery. 2 hours back to 'buffalo fence' then the speed boat another hour back to Island Safari camp where we are staying tonight and it was shower time :)
This afternoon we had the opportunity to take a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta and look down on all the rivers and wildlife. Only 3 people in the group opted out, so 18 of us went for a 45 minute flight and it was definatly worth it. We had a 5 seater plane so it was Randa, Nicole, Phoebe, Mel and me which was a brilliant group. It was a pretty bumpy journey though, it was more like a roller coaster but we saw hundreds of elephants (no joke, literally hundreds), giraffes, buffalo, hippos and zebras! They were the ones I could identify and there were loads more.
After returning to camp, 3 of us helped Chris prepare dinner. We made a huge salad, chopped onions, chives, peeled tatties along with a nice cold cider. It started getting dark above and it wasn't long before we heard the thunder. Within 30minutes we were in the middle of another crazy thunder and lightening storm, and the campsite turned into a lake within an hour. We all had tea huddled under a canopy then headed for shelter in the bar. There really isnt any other option, as it's pitch dark by 7pm, the tents are small and very hot, the truck is always locked straight after tea so the bar is the place to socialise.
Prior to the rain storm, Adrian our driver and a few others encountered a spinning python or cobra. Yup that's right a deadly snake! :( you only have 20 hours to live if you get stung by one of these and can't get medical attention. This along with the toilet block being full of huge harmful spiders that are the size of your hand - I'm starting to get nervous at times. Saying that... I still managed to make the 10minute walk back to camp myself in the dark. After the desert experience I will reassess myself and see if I'm finally getting over this phobia.
After all that rain, I eventually braved it at bedtime to see whether or not my things had stayed dry in the tent after the horrendous storm. Its totally dark just now and Phoebe is already sleeping so it's hard to tell, I will soon find out in the morning if I have any dry clothes to put on!!!
The mokoro ride and Okavango Delta flight was definatly the highlight of today :) xxx
