Nothing like another 5am alarm clock in the bush by a poler! Our safari walk started at 5.30am, with a 10 minute Mokoro ride through the reeds to the main island!
We went back into the same groups as yesterday, and went for a good 3 hour walk through the bush. It was lovely until around 8am when it started getting really hot! We got really close to Zebra's and antelopes. We seen giraffes, wildebeests and different breed of antelopes in the distance. It certainly was more interesting than yesterday's foot safari. The Makoro's are amazing though, the delta rivers are so still therefore you just glide through the water and reeds. The most relaxing and beautiful journey I have ever been on.
By the time we got back to camp I was struggling to cope with the heat, and there was hardly any shade to shelter. Everyone sat round the campfire chatting when someone spotted the longest scariest snake ever!!! I managed not to scream and I stayed pretty calm to be honest, UNTIL everyone that was watching it started crowding round Phoebe and my tent...! Yes it had crawled under our tent :( I freaked at this stage and everyone now knows I have a phobia. I kept it quiet until now as I was being really strong.
To cool and calm down, Nicole, Phoebe and I went swimming in the delta :) It was so much fun, I kept my eye out for water snakes but after a while I managed to relax and swim around! The water was so clear, with water lilly's and reeds all around!
We were in the water for ages before lunch, making hair pieces out of the gorgeous flowers and taking loads of photos with the flowers and water lillys!! Evidence to follow hehe!
It was a lovely morning and we thought we would just go and sit under the shade of a tree and relax prior to lunch, when a helicopter circled over our heads! We thought it was just tourists and waved back, until 5mins later our truck driver Adrian arrived out of the bush with 3 others and a cool box. It was them in the chopper and they had brought 3 bottles of cold champagne and beers for us! It was such a surprise and so much fun. We all said it was actually better than our morning safari!!! After the champers we continued onto the chilled rosé wine we already had in our own cool box.
It was siesta time until 5pm so we had the afternoon to chillax :) and that's certainly what we did! After the heat killed us, we headed for another swim to cool down! The swim then turned into Phoebe, Nicole and I 'borrowing' a Makoro and taking it for a sail!! Phoebe had a 5 minute lesson from Chris yesterday so we knew the basics, well we thought we did. It was so much fun though, and we mastered it ourselves. After going a good 40minutes in one direction we noticed the clouds had changed colour and the thunder was getting closer. This wouldn't have been a problem if we hadn't left out cameras lying out on the bank with our clothes. The more we tried to hurry back the more the Makoro got stuck in the reeds :) it was such a giggle and I loved being captain of the Makoro lol. We made it back in plenty time before the thunder storm, even had time to get the cheese and wine looked out before the rain started.
It was a pretty impressive storm, thunder was so loud and so close to the lightening strikes. Randa, Phoebe, Mel, Nicole and I had a tent party with bottles of really nice south African wine and proper cheese :) Yup Brie... It was soooo good after 2 months without it! Due to the storm our Makoro sunset sail was cancelled :(
After it eventually stopped and turned the whole campsite into a mud bath, I had a baby wipe shower! I was so impressed at how clean I felt after it, some dry shampoo and I was ready to party :) Ulrik then shouted on us, as there was 2 huge elephants walking behind the camp, it just reminded us all we were actually in the bush.
After dinner, the polars entertained us with songs, dancing and a play round the campfire or 'bush tv'! After another bottle of red later it was bed for Phoebe and I at 9pm!!!
It has been an amazing day in the Okavango Delta. Botswana is beautiful!!! Everyone should experience the delta. xxx
