Vicky's Travels..
Hello everyone!
Apologies for very short last postcard - there was simply too much fun to be had and I didn't want to miss out! Have been having the most amazing time. I think the last time I emailed was when we were in Bangok - where we did lots of cultural stuff - like the Grand Palace and stuff, which I think I mentioned in another postcard - can't remember, but have definitely told someone about it!
Since then we have been to Kanchanaburi, with a girl from Poland, 4 Aussies, a South African and a German! They all travelled up by bus, whereas we caught the train that we had already booked. We spent 3 hours on a train that only had wooden seats, talk about numb bum by the time we arrived! We had arranged to meet up with the others at a certain guest house, although neither of us had any idea what time we would get there. Lo and behold we all arrived at exactly the same! The guest house was full anyway so we all piled back into a tuk tuk and went off in search of another one that could fit all of us.
Quite by chance we ended up a lovely place called Sugar Cane. It was right on the banks of the River Kwai and had a little platform deck that you could sit on and watch the sunset with a beer - lovely! Had dinner at the night markets, for about 20p - and it was soooo good!
On Saturday we all hired mopeds and and headed off to Erawan Waterfalls, where it took us all day to climb. Should have some great piccies of that, so will try and put them on. It looked so funny, all of us in a great convoy - looking like complete tourists!
On Sunday the girls and I went to the JEATH museum, which is all about the POWs and how they built the Bridge over the River Kwai, fascinating but heartbreaking too. One man died for every 1.5 metrs of track laid. We also went to one of the war cemeteries. It was really beautiful, very peaceful and calm. We then had another chilled afternoon and watched yet another sunset!
On Monday we all got up at 6.30 and jumped off the Bridge over the River Kwai! It was all a bit scary but very exciting too! Once we were in the water the current carried us back to our guest house - handy 'eh!?
After a 6 hour train ride on the Death Railway we then had an hour to kill before our 15 hour train ride to Chiang Mai, where we have just arrived. Feeling alright now I've had a shower but think I might flag a bit later on!
Not entirely sure what the plan is for the rest of the week. Think we are going to catch up with the Aussies from last weekend and then head off somewhere round here. We need to be back here reasonably soon though to try and find accommodation for New Year - which is next week - the same day as my birthday! I'm sure it'll all come together - not sure how but I'll just have to wait and see!
Hope all's well with all of you, mail soon if you can - take care, bye!
