I think I managed to drive quite well even if I do say so myself! It was because I had Nikki and Nat using the ipod and giving me directions but it worked as we didnt get lost. First of all we picked up Jesse as he had come to meet us and then we drove to Coogee where Hannah lived. We parked outside her house and went in to say hello. She was very kindly letting us have access to her bathroom. Well we hadnt showered in 3 days! When we were all clean the plan was to head across on a ferry to near Taronga Zoo to find a good place to watch the fireworks for the next night. We headed to Circular Quay on the bus and caught the ferry across. We walked down a track and followed a path than ran along side the harbour. We came to a place where it would be really good to see the fireworks from as it was on the opposite side to the Opera house and the bridge. It was such a nice spot a couple were getting married there. So we knew where we wanted to be. We headed back on the ferry and bus to Hannahs house. We then got in the van and went to the supermarket to buy supplies as would need to get there early to get the position we wanted. We bought lots of snacks and some burgers to cook on our stove.
So the next morning we left Hannahs house at about 9am and had to make our way over to the otherside of the Harbour in the van. We went through the tunnel rather than over the bridge as it was closed. We arrived nice and early but to our disappointment the area was where we wanted to go was fenced off and you needed a ticket to get in. So feeling a bit worried we quickly googled where it was free to sit on Nikki's ipad and came across Cremorne Point which was quite close to where we were. We set off to check it out. When we got there, there were quite a few places where we could go. So the boys went off to investigate the best spot while me and Nat went to see if we could find anywhere near to park as where we had pulled up was annoying the bus drivers as we were getting evil looks! We found a spot at the top of a hill which had a long road leading down to the water. It turned out the others thought it would take too long for them to walk to the van and back with the stuff as they would lose the spot. So I drove back down to drop off the stuff and go back to park, leaving Nat gaurding the space! When I got there they were debating about spaces so they took longer to collect the things. Poor Nat had to defend the space against quite a few people I think as it was about the last space left. I eventually got back and reclaimed the space. So all was good. Me and Nat walked down the hill to find the others and they had a really good spot. It was right on the waters edge opposite the Opera house and sky scrapers with the harbour bridge slightly to the right hand side. It was about 11am now so we had a good while to wait. Luckily the weather was fantastic, it was sunny and hot but not too hot. We layed in the sun, listened to Nats ipod and speakers, had snacks, the boys went swimming in the harbour and played cards. We cooked up some burgers and hotdogs. At about 6pm there were some acrobatic planes to entertain us and a sky writer. It started to get dark about 8:30pm. There were 2 firework shows, one at 9pm and one at midnight. It wasnt completely dark at 9pm but the fireworks were still good. We could see all the way down the coast and could see the fireworks also at Bondi beach. They were perfectly in time with the ones at the bridge. During the 9pm show the bridge didnt light up too much it was mostly just fireworks in the sky. They were amazing and definitely gave us a taste of what was to come. We then had 3 hours to wait until the real deal. It turned a bit chilly as the sun had gone so I made everyone a cup of tea. When the time came there was a 60 second countdown on the bridge and then they started again. This time they were bigger and there was more of them. The bridge was lit up and had fireworks coming off it. The skyscrapers had fireworks coming off them and lights on the outside. Some of the fireworks looked like planets and there were heart shaped ones over the bridge. The whole thing lasted about 10 minutes. It was spectacular.
Afterwards everyone started moving so we packed up our things and carried them back up the hill to the van. We were going to drive to a friend of Simon's house as thats where Hannah and Simon were sleeping. We were just going to park outside as we couldnt go back over the bridge as it was still closed. They were having a house party so it was a bit noisey but it was fine.
The next morning we woke up and drove back over the bridge this time into the city. We had tickets to the Field Day concert. It was from 11am to 11pm. Once again it was a glorious hot day so we sat in the sun for a while until it got going. People playing there were Calvin Harris, Moby, Example and many more. It was a good day. We drove back to Hannahs house afterwards via McDonalds.
The next day was a day just chilling and sorting things out. I cleaned out the van and put everything back neatlyu and washed up all the dishes. The following day we went to Manly beach and relaxed there on the beach and had a BBQ. In the evening we had a few drinks before returning back to Hannahs house. The next day it was time to give our van back. It had served us well and had come in very handy over New Year as we were able to just sleep where ever we wanted. It was quite sad to see it go.
Later that day I flew back to Melbourne for my last week in Australia.
